For International Women’s Day, was approached by the BACP to provide an article about what is being heard in the therapy room related to women’s mental health in 2026. This was published on the BACP website.

What feels more intense this year is that women are exploring whether their current path is sustainable and are also seeking support to enhance their optimal well-
being.

Emotional labour is no longer rare, it is a common concept I hear frequently in my therapy room.

Some other common themes I have heard this year include navigating life transitions and the unpredictability of life, caregiving, resentment, dating fatigue and tools to manage self-esteem.

There has also been a shift in traditional roles, with women renegotiating what partnership looks like. Disconnection from self and others is leading to conversations around their existential world and the desire to build more meaningful relationships. This has led to exploration on personal growth, feelings associated with guilt, and managing boundaries.

From my observation this year, mental health is increasingly being viewed as an ecosystem. There appears to be a shift from mental health to a full-body, full-person and full-life experience.

These topics highlight the multifaceted nature of mental health and the importance of therapy in navigating some of the issues we are seeing in modern life.

Therapy isn’t about quick fixes — it’s about trust, consistency, patience, adaptability and human connection.

This week, I received an email from a long-term client who I worked with who wrote “Thank you Bal, I know I’m ready to go solo on my own now”. As I reflected and visualised my client, their entire journey came flooding back to me.

From the first moment we connected, to hearing the most vulnerable parts. To exploring the traumatic events, to delving deeper into their existential world. To observing their glimmers, hope and vision for the future, whilst gradually noticing their physiology changing.

I sent out a gentle affirmation to them having full trust and confidence in their abilities with the words, “you go *********, you’ve so got this!”

I am forever grateful to each client for allowing me the opportunity to hold their stories, secrets, emotions and allowing them to be courageous enough to explore their own truth.

I am sharing some feedback received over the past five months.

As of January 9th 2026, RoadPeace charity announced it’s closure.

RoadPeace was the UK’s national charity supporting road crash victims. Founded in 1992 by Brigitte Chaudhry MBE, it provided support, advocacy and justice for those bereaved or injured by road traffic incidents.

Key details about RoadPeace:
* Purpose: The charity focused on supporting victims, campaigning to reduce road danger, and challenging the perception that some of these events are merely “accidents”.
* Support Services: Offered emotional support, befriending, and guidance for victims, families, and witnesses, including those in Merseyside.
* Key Initiatives: Initiated the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, which was adopted by the UN in 2005.
* Legacy: Worked for over 30 years to ensure victims’ rights, providing a lasting impact on road safety advocacy.

It has been an honour working for this charity, offering support to families and parents who were bereaved. My work also included facilitating an eight-week “Building Resilience” programme.

What working with grief and loss has taught me is that grief is non-linear. It is a deeply personal process that cannot be bypassed, only moved through. It has highlighted the universality of loss, the necessity of patience, and that healing involves integrating loss into everyday reality.

If you or a family member need access to support, please know that support is available through other organisations.

“Words have a magical power. They can either bring the greatest happiness or the deepest despair” ~Sigmund Freud

Vienna took me right back to my student days. Stepping into the world of Sigmund Freud (1856-1939).

Wien IX, Berggasse 19. Known as the birthplace of psychoanalysis, where Freud lived and worked for forty seven years.

A neurologist by profession, and the founder of psychoanalysis. He became one of the 20th century’s most influential, albeit controversial thinkers.

His Key Contributions include:
* Psychoanalysis: A therapeutic technique applying dialogue to treat mental distress, believing past experiences shape present behaviour.
* The Unconscious: Proposed that much of our mind operates outside conscious awareness, holding hidden thoughts, memories and desires.
* ID, Ego, Superego: A structural model of the mind, representing primal desires and moral conscience.
* Dream Interpretation: Believed dreams offered insights into unconscious conflicts.
* Psychosexual Stages: Theories on childhood development, positing unconscious desires.

For many therapists like myself, Freud provided the ground from which modern psychotherapy grew. The diverse range of therapeutic approaches applied today ensures that while his ideas remain influential, they are part of a much larger, more varied professional toolkit.

If you could have an hour with a therapist (past or present), who would it be and why?

Company culture is not just the ethos of a company, or words displayed on walls. It is how people “really” make you feel and how inclusive they are.

I’m grateful to work for someone who understands that life outside the office, impacts life inside it. This someone happens to be my supervisor.

Her invaluable advice has guided the trajectory of my career. She has helped guide me through many difficult decisions not only in my career, but also contributed towards the developments in my personal life.

The last few months of this year presented some unexpected circumstances. Yet Julie’s guidance and regular check in made me feel respected and valued. She has always created a safe environment for me to show up authentically and unfiltered, empowering me to be stronger and committed.

To date all our work had taken place online, which is why last week I made a conscious decision to commute and meet her in person. It is a meeting that will stay with me. I’m sharing a photograph that was captured that day.

The words of Carl Jung sums up our connection.“Know all the theories, master all the techniques, but as you touch a human soul, be just another human soul”.

Who says faith doesn’t work?

Fear is driven by, “what if”, whereas faith is driven by, “even if”.

I set up in private practice at the end of 2019. Some of you may not be aware, but I was completely stressed, unhappy and burnt out in the corporate industry.

At the time I heard comments such as :-
-I wonder what she will do now, professionally?
-She’s too old to be changing her career.
-Does she even have the right skills to carry out this role, or run a business?
- Why start a business ahead of a global pandemic?
In a nutshell, “is she good enough?”

Was it hard? Yes it was. I faced far more rejection, criticism, hardship than imagined, from those least expected. I was redirected several times, in places never anticipated. Yet something deep within my core kept me focused and held me accountable, even on those challenging days.

So what kept me motivated, despite the adversities? It was my faith and a visualisation book! That’s right, two tools.

The gift of offering glimmers to others, whilst trying to be as real and authentic as possible was what kept me going. It was a commitment that I made to a loved one many years ago whose physical presence is no longer here, but spiritually still directs the choices I make.

I even turned down opportunities which would have increased my credentials, but something about what was being offered, did not align with my moral compass, or who I represented as an individual.

September 2023, I had the opportunity to meet , whose work I deeply admire. I was struck by her gentleness and humility. As we shook hands and parted ways, I instantly knew that our worlds would collide. Nobody knew this at the time, but I carried that feeling with me and it was written in-between the chapters of my diary.

Fast forward to July 2025, I am delighted to announce that I will be joining “The Samuel Therapy Practice”, and supporting Julia and the team, providing therapeutic support to the public. Truly honoured to have the opportunity to be mentored by her.

As I sit here, I am thinking back to my visualisation book from five years ago, with nothing more than gratitude.

I want to thank all those individuals who have played a pivotal part in my journey, and also those who have supported me on social media.

BW,
Bal

Christmas, is suppose to be the most wonderful time of the year. Yet for some parents Christmas can be the season that feels like they’re constantly refereeing between squabbling siblings.

Was approached by BACP to share some tips for parents how they can manage sibling strife at Christmas. This article was published on the BACP directory.

Today I received confirmation that I have successfully passed my application and achieved my accreditation with British Assosciation for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

For those who have gone through the process will know that it is a rigid and robust process. So despite the process, what made me continue?

I entered this profession driven by my own personal journey and also, a deep need for ‘real’ and ‘authentic’ connection with others.

I’ve always said that the joy of being a therapist lies in the privilege of being invited into people’s lives, often during their most adverse moments. Each client’s story is a unique tapestry, and I am continuously amazed by the strength and resilience that my clients bring into our therapeutic work.

The journey they take from despair to hope, from confusion to clarity, from feeling stuck to change, is both humbling and inspiring to witness. I have learnt so much from my clients and this is certainly something I do not take lightly.

Yes, therapists are paid for their time, knowledge and skills. Yet our hearts are often our finest instrument that we offer others. So often clients share, that knowing I genuinely cared was one of the biggest factors that enabled them to go where they needed to go in their therapy, and this is truly humbling to hear.

Endless sleepless nights played a part in gaining this! I genuinely could not have done this without my amazing and incredible supervisor. She’s the reason I persevered.

As I embrace this status, my aim is to invest more passionately into serving my clients authentically.

It’s been a while since I’ve shared a post. For those new members who have joined, welcome.

My name is Bal. I’m based in Saffron Walden, Essex.

Starting with the role I do professionally (some refer to this as work), but for me it represents something much more deeper. It represents everything that I stand for, which is why it has never “felt” like work. Instead I refer to this as my purpose in life.

I have the privilege to support private clients, employee assisted providers, corporate wellbeing, private health providers, frontline staff and students (18+). The vast majority is trauma and grief focused.

In recent months, I have also been supporting victims who have been bereaved in road crashes for a charity called, Roadpeace. I also deliver a building resilience programme for this incredible charity.

Outside of work, I enjoy a quiet lifestyle.

The question I ask myself everyday, is, “what do I want my home and life to feel like?” Typical therapist questions perhaps, but this resonates for me and redirects me to the things which are most important in life.

I’m truly grateful as following my purpose has allowed me to explore the creative side of life, spending time in nature, art and theatre, learning about different cultures and traveling (road-trips in particular).

My creativity also translates through a huge passion of mine, which is writing.

My purpose has always been to write from the heart about human experiences, whilst incorporating spirituality into the theme. Many of you have asked whether I intend to write more, and the answer is most definitely, YES.

My writing would be centred around how to improve our optimal mental health. I would love to know what else you would like to read about? ⬇️
