For International Women’s Day, was approached by the BACP to provide an article about what is being heard in the therapy room related to women’s mental health in 2026. This was published on the BACP website.
What feels more intense this year is that women are exploring whether their current path is sustainable and are also seeking support to enhance their optimal well-
being.
Emotional labour is no longer rare, it is a common concept I hear frequently in my therapy room.
Some other common themes I have heard this year include navigating life transitions and the unpredictability of life, caregiving, resentment, dating fatigue and tools to manage self-esteem.
There has also been a shift in traditional roles, with women renegotiating what partnership looks like. Disconnection from self and others is leading to conversations around their existential world and the desire to build more meaningful relationships. This has led to exploration on personal growth, feelings associated with guilt, and managing boundaries.
From my observation this year, mental health is increasingly being viewed as an ecosystem. There appears to be a shift from mental health to a full-body, full-person and full-life experience.
These topics highlight the multifaceted nature of mental health and the importance of therapy in navigating some of the issues we are seeing in modern life.
