Who says faith doesn’t work?

Fear is driven by, “what if”, whereas faith is driven by, “even if”.

I set up in private practice at the end of 2019. Some of you may not be aware, but I was completely stressed, unhappy and burnt out in the corporate industry.

At the time I heard comments such as :-
-I wonder what she will do now, professionally?
-She’s too old to be changing her career.
-Does she even have the right skills to carry out this role, or run a business?
- Why start a business ahead of a global pandemic?
In a nutshell, “is she good enough?”

Was it hard? Yes it was. I faced far more rejection, criticism, hardship than imagined, from those least expected. I was redirected several times, in places never anticipated. Yet something deep within my core kept me focused and held me accountable, even on those challenging days.

So what kept me motivated, despite the adversities? It was my faith and a visualisation book! That’s right, two tools.

The gift of offering glimmers to others, whilst trying to be as real and authentic as possible was what kept me going. It was a commitment that I made to a loved one many years ago whose physical presence is no longer here, but spiritually still directs the choices I make.

I even turned down opportunities which would have increased my credentials, but something about what was being offered, did not align with my moral compass, or who I represented as an individual.

September 2023, I had the opportunity to meet , whose work I deeply admire. I was struck by her gentleness and humility. As we shook hands and parted ways, I instantly knew that our worlds would collide. Nobody knew this at the time, but I carried that feeling with me and it was written in-between the chapters of my diary.

Fast forward to July 2025, I am delighted to announce that I will be joining “The Samuel Therapy Practice”, and supporting Julia and the team, providing therapeutic support to the public. Truly honoured to have the opportunity to be mentored by her.

As I sit here, I am thinking back to my visualisation book from five years ago, with nothing more than gratitude.

I want to thank all those individuals who have played a pivotal part in my journey, and also those who have supported me on social media.

BW,
Bal

Christmas, is suppose to be the most wonderful time of the year. Yet for some parents Christmas can be the season that feels like they’re constantly refereeing between squabbling siblings.

Was approached by BACP to share some tips for parents how they can manage sibling strife at Christmas. This article was published on the BACP directory.

Today I received confirmation that I have successfully passed my application and achieved my accreditation with British Assosciation for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

For those who have gone through the process will know that it is a rigid and robust process. So despite the challenges, what made me continue?

I entered this profession driven by my own personal journey and also, a deep need for ‘real’ and ‘authentic’ connection with others.

I’ve always said that the joy of being a therapist lies in the privilege of being invited into people’s lives, often during their most adverse moments. Each client’s story is a unique tapestry, and I am continuously amazed by the strength and resilience that my clients bring into our therapeutic work.

The journey they take from despair to hope, from confusion to clarity, from feeling stuck to change, is both humbling and inspiring to witness. I have learnt so much from my clients and this is certainly something I do not take lightly.

Yes, therapists are paid for their time, knowledge and skills. Yet our hearts are often our finest instrument that we offer others. So often clients share, that knowing I genuinely cared was one of the biggest factors that enabled them to go where they needed to go in their therapy, and this is truly humbling to hear.

Endless sleepless nights played a part in gaining this! I genuinely could not have done this without my amazing and incredible supervisor. She’s the reason I persevered.

As I embrace this status, my aim is to invest more passionately into serving my clients authentically.

It’s been a while since I’ve shared a post. For those new members who have joined, welcome.

My name is Bal. I’m based in Saffron Walden, Essex.

Starting with the role I do professionally (some refer to this as work), but for me it represents something much more deeper. It represents everything that I stand for, which is why it has never “felt” like work. Instead I refer to this as my purpose in life.

I have the privilege to support private clients, employee assisted providers, corporate wellbeing, private health providers, frontline staff and students (18+). The vast majority is trauma and grief focused.

In recent months, I have also been supporting victims who have been bereaved in road crashes for a charity called, Roadpeace. I also deliver a building resilience programme for this incredible charity.

Outside of work, I enjoy a quiet lifestyle.

The question I ask myself everyday, is, “what do I want my home and life to feel like?” Typical therapist questions perhaps, but this resonates for me and redirects me to the things which are most important in life.

I’m truly grateful as following my purpose has allowed me to explore the creative side of life, spending time in nature, art and theatre, learning about different cultures and traveling (road-trips in particular).

My creativity also translates through a huge passion of mine, which is writing.

My purpose has always been to write from the heart about human experiences, whilst incorporating spirituality into the theme. Many of you have asked whether I intend to write more, and the answer is most definitely, YES.

My writing would be centred around how to improve our optimal mental health. I would love to know what else you would like to read about? ⬇️

The National Grief Awareness Week this year will take place from 2nd - 8th of December.

The campaign is set up to raise awareness of all aspects of grief and loss, to normalise the concept of grief, and to better equip those who are experiencing grief.

On the 4th December, in honour of grief awareness week I shared my top tips on how to support those who are grieving which was published on the BACP directory.

“Every family has a story” ~ by Julie Samuel

A pleasure to have attended the live talk by who spoke about transgenerational trauma, love and connection within families.

Also presented a safe space for us practitioners to share our own stories and experiences.

A big shout out to for the invite and for being such wonderful hosts.

“If you look deeply into the palm of your hands, you will see your parents and all generations of your ancestors. All of them are alive in this moment. Each is present in your body. You are the continuation of each of these people” - Thich Nhat Hanh

This was the pear tree which was planted in the family house with both my parents over twenty-five years ago in Oxford. I remember not being able to see anything, and at first thought nothing had been planted.

Today my mother’s wisdom still echoes in my ears, “does not matter if you can’t see anything, just keep watering the roots”.

As my first footstep touched the grounds at the Master Trauma and Health conference at the Sheldonian theatre in Oxford, I saluted and honoured both my parents and my spiritual teachers for their sacrifices.

Truly honoured and indebted to the pillars who planted these roots.

Truly humbled to have spent the day meeting the visionaries and pioneers of those who have created a legacy in the world of trauma and mental health.

❇️ Dr Peter Levine founder of Somatic Experiencing.

❇️ Dr. Stephen Porges, founder of the Polyvagal Theory and Deb Dana.

❇️ Richard Schwartz, founder of the Internal Family Systems branch of therapy.

❇️ Janina Fisher - Shared her insight into healing the fragmented selves of trauma survivors.

❇️ Ruth Cohn - Spoke about the developmental trauma of childhood neglect.

❇️ Julia Samuel MBE- Shared her insight into transgenerational trauma in families.

❇️ Betsy Polatin - Explored the musculoskeletal, respiratory and nervous systems and how they relate to the larger universe and to trauma.

❇️ Dr Aimie Apigian - Shared her insight into the biology of trauma.

❇️ Linda Thai - Shared her journey to self-discovery as she spoke about intergenerational and ancestral trauma, touching on the immigrant experience and family dynamics.

❇️Cathy Malchiodi - Spoke about expressive arts therapy and sensory-based approaches

❇️Steve Dansiger - Systematic innovation for trauma focused care applying EMDR, Mindfulness and technology

❇️Jon Goldin - The risk and benefits of social media for the mental health of young people

❇️ Bruce Dixon & Eugene Ellis - The race conversation - social justice, embodied process and finding your voice

❇️ Tatiana Von Varchmin- Holistic yoga fusion with deep relaxation

❇️ Ajoya -Combining sound therapy (polyvagal music)

To have had the opportunity to exchange and learn from their wisdom and compassionate sense of humility was humbling and I look forward to sharing this in my therapeutic work.
