Just wrapped up the Prolon 5-Day Nutrition Program, a “fast-mimicking” diet designed to reverse ageing by activating autophagy—a cellular recycling process triggered in a fasted state. This explains why fasting has been a healing practice for thousands of years.

I wanted to experience the program firsthand before recommending it to clients who might benefit from a metabolic reset. The goal? Deliver essential nutrients while maintaining fat-burning metabolism. Here’s what I noticed over the 5 days:

• Increases: Energy, mental clarity, productivity, motivation, and stability.
• Decreases: Muscle/joint pain (longstanding niggles gone), resting heart rate, blood pressure, and less nose blowing.
• Bonus: Less washing up and a 2.2kg loss (no shock at 750 calories/day!).

The toughest part for this foodie? Dreaming of meals I couldn’t make. Hunger was there but manageable, and cravings were stronger at the start. Planning is key—I timed it perfectly while my wife was away for 5 days. Trying this during a busy or social week? Not ideal.

Scientist Valter Longo, the mind behind this program, claims doing it 3 times in 3 months can reverse metabolic ageing by 2.5 years. Beyond metabolic health, the program is refreshingly simple: just open packets, add water or olive oil to soups, and stir.

As a nutritionist, I never thought I’d endorse 5 days of boxed meals, but I’m impressed. For clients needing urgent intervention—like weight loss, type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular health, or NAFLD—or for busy individuals looking for a quick, no-brainer reset, this gets my thumbs up.

I was experimenting with a continuous glucose monitor recently.

Couple things… firstly, bread and banana… big spike for me🙄Go figure.

But more importantly, look what a quick walk can do to bring down blood sugar🤯.

This is because our legs and glutes are the body’s biggest repository for glucose. And when you use them, it’s like squeezing water out of a sponge so that it can absorb more.

Not forgetting that our muscles can be triggered to absorb glucose via two mechanisms, Insulin and Exercise. So that’s good news for the insulin-resistant.

I’m reminded of the ancient saying from the Chinese philosopher, Confucius, who famously said… “Walk 100 steps after every meal, and you’ll live to be 100 years old.” Ok it might take a bit more than that but he was onto something.😉💯

I guess I should have known that 1kg of quinoa puffs would be massive!😲

But as they say, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade!😁 And in this case, I’m experimenting with quinoa puff granola, and I have to say, it’s the best tasting granola I’ve made in a long while.

I went simple…

-Quinoa puffs
-Coconut flakes
-Flaked Almonds
-Chopped Pecans
-a pinch of sea salt
-a dash of cinnamon

-2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
-2 tbsp maple syrup
-A few drops of vanilla extract

Put the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl.

Whisk together the EVOO, Maple syrup and vanilla, then stir it into the quinoa nut mix, mixing it thoroughly to coat all the quinoa.

Toast in the oven at 140c (285f) until lightly brown (20mins or so).

When cooled serve with your favourite alternative milk…
e.g. almond, coconut, soy…

For those going relatively low carb, this meal was off the chart, inspired from Hemsley & Hemsley’s The Art of Eating Well.

Black bean & feta burgers in lettuce wraps with purple cabbage slaw and courgette fries coated in a parmesan almond flour crumb.

With food choices like this at railway stations across the country, is it any wonder over half the populace are insulin resistant, over weight, and at an increased risk of coronary artery disease? Apart from water, I struggled to find anything “healthy” to consume… a perfect opportunity to do some intermittent fasting, I say!🥳

I get it. It’s an issue of shelf-life and profitability. Fresh produce and real food goes off quickly and is more likely to end up in the bin. Ultra-processed food (perfectly represented by what’s on these shelves… and currently accounting for over 50% of the British diet) is far more likely to be bought same day, and if not, can happily sit on the shelf until tomorrow… or next year for that matter. A far better bet for the retailer and for ‘big food’. But a slow-acting poison for the consumer.

That might sound a bit extreme but the definition of poison is “a substance that is capable of causing illness or death if consumed”. No one can deny that these foods and drinks, if consumed often enough, fit well within that definition.

So what’s the solution? Perhaps it’s about “competitive exclusion”. The more “real food” can take up shelf space, the more likely it will crowd out the junk. Or maybe it’s about education, or maybe both, but one thing’s for sure… as long as this type of food dominates, there will always be a need for nutritional therapists and an over-burdened health service because… you can’t drug your way out of a food problem.

A significant portion of the UK population doesn’t meet the recommended daily allowance for a number of essential vitamins and minerals, such as Vitamin D, folate, calcium, magnesium, selenium, iron, iodine and omega-3. The story is much the same stateside.

What many don’t realise is that the RDA’s were established during war time to prevent overt disease but these nutrient levels often bare no resemblance to what we need for optimum health. Vitamin D is only one example.

I can’t recommend this book enough for anyone who has an interest in energy metabolism - that is to say, how we convert the food we eat into energy and either use that energy or store it.

There is no denying that the biggest plague that faces modern day humanity is metabolic ill health. Well over half the population of the USA & the UK are insulin resistant, a direct result of refined, ultra-processed food consumption, which sadly accounts for more than half the calories of the average British and American diet today.

This book elegantly explains the biochemistry that helps you understand that obesity is not the problem, it’s the symptom... one of many, including cardiovascular disease, type two diabetes, gout, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, accelerated ageing… all downstream effects of putting the wrong fuel in the human engine… and we’re spending Trillions on drugs that can’t possibly fix the problem. As Dr. Lustig says in his book, these symptoms are not “drugable”, but they are “foodable”. 👏🏻😊

First time making sushi… 🤣

no recipe… just inspired by some Nori seaweed sheets that I saw at Waitrose and some beautiful fresh crab from my local monger.

So I just threw it together with some avocado, mooli radish and a few nigella seeds. Also had a couple slices of treacle trout in the side.

Next time I should probably put a bit more thought into, or heaven forbid, actually use a recipe ;-) but it was fun. And the absence of rice meant I didn’t get a carb crash afterwards.

p.s. Crab happens to be the second highest food source of zinc.
