Really cool for anyone that wants to start running. Now is the time and everyone has to start somewhere. Follow Jill for running advise and coaching - shes brilliant.
How to start running?
There was a stage where I literally couldn’t run for more than 5 minutes without having to stop and gasp for air! I found running impossible. Everyone made it look so effortless and easy and there was I red faced, puffing and panting and begging for it to all be over. Maybe you can relate to this too.
If you’re someone who wants to improve on their running but doesn’t know where to start, here are my top tips!
➡️Start easy. You will be tempted to run as far as you can or as fast as you can straight away. This will only lead to injury which will prevent you from running. Balance your run with walking stages to ease yourself into it, i.e. run 3 minutes, walk 3 minutes and repeat.
➡️Set yourself small achievable goals. Don’t think about the big end goal but set yourself realistic targets for the week, e.g. increase your distance by 1km, or reduce your walking time between your running splits by 1 minute. This will keep up your motivation and increase your cardio fitness.
➡️Follow a structured plan - there are heaps of plans out there which can help you, such as C25K or C210K, or equally there are heaps of running coaches about who can make you a specific training plan for the goal you want to achieve. It can make you a much more efficient and effective runner, keep you on track and make you accountable!
➡️Buy some good kit. It doesn’t need to be all the snazzy gear, but I’d strongly recommend investing in a good pair of running trainers (when there isn’t a lockdown I’d recommend getting a gait analysis at somewhere like or ) to help you avoid injury and get the most out of each run. Equally, you cannot underestimate the importance of a great sports bra. I’ve tried and tested loads but found the All Train Sports Bra is excellent (for me, everyone is different).
Nutrition, sleep, hormones, recovery and stretching all play a huge part too! Make sure you’re giving your body what it needs to perform at its best.
Running is very much mind over matter…ignoring that voice in your head telling you to stop is HARD…its often much more about the mental game than the physical ability!
