It’s the season of flip flops, sandals, and foot pain!
In the summer months people slip on pretty, easy to wear slip on shoes that offer zero support, are incredibly flat and often have to be held on by crunching your toes up. This inevitably leads to strain on the fascia of the underside your foot, potentially repetitive strain in the tendons, and frequently? The beginnings of plantar fasciitis.
So when you come in with foot pain and I ask how far you walked in flip-flops, I haven’t gone all psychic on you, we’re just trying to break the cycle! Flip flops are great but let’s leave them for short potters about and the beach, or sitting in the sunshine with an ice lolly 🙂

This week we saw Aaron who has been struggling with pain in the front of his shoulder, and the upper arm, especially when lifting his arm to work above his head. The Biceps tendon and Supraspinatus tendon were being pinched in the sub acromial space; commonly known as shoulder impingement.
Looking at Aaron’s posture his arm rotates inwards which adds to the pinching effect.
After sone ultrasound and massage to rebalance the muscles, the acute pain has reduced, and Aaron has some rehab exercises to do to correct his shoulder position and speed up his recovery.

Having been ‘summoned to the set’ on a few occasions I had a giggle at this!
I will add I haven’t worked with these specific actors/this set, but working on set has always been great fun and I love the challenge of getting someone fit to perform on the sidelines when accidents happen.

Today we treated Sean who came to us in a lot of pain with his back, finding it very difficult to move and especially bend down. We found that the Quadratus lumborum muscle on the right side of his back was in spasm, with the surrounding muscles of the hips and back incredibly tight.
When a muscle is in intense spasm it responds beautifully to heat and firm repetitive massage, so we applied heat and then massaged with increasing depth to release the muscle. We also loosened off his tight hamstrings and hips that were playing a part in his injury. He left feeling a lot more mobile and in less pain. Sean don’t forget that hot bath, we hope you’re feeling fighting fit again soon.

This week we treated Ian who had just completed a ‘marathon challenge’ with 3 challenging runs on consecutive days equalling a marathon. He came to see us for a post event treatment to loosen tight muscles and rebalance his back and legs after the strain of the event. Particularly he had found his shins were tight due to the uneven terrain, after his treatment he’s now feeling supple again and ready for his next upcoming race.

We recently treated Ross who came in with pain at the back of his ankle, especially when up on his toes. On assessment he was suffering with posterior ankle impingement, which is a pinching of soft tissues or the bone and is often caused by ankle instability or repeated ankle sprains.
Not only was Ross in pain with this injury he was also training for a Tough Mudder, a ten mile obstacle course. We worked on reducing the inflammation and stabilising the ankle, reducing pain, and got Ross ready for the event in June, which he completed happily and while the ankle is a little irritated, it’s well on the way to recovery once more!
