What to do after having your sports massage.

Some useful tips for you to know after your appointment, especially if you have any events coming up.

1. Hydration - drink plenty of water after your session and continue throughout your day. Sports massages can be intense (similar to your training) so it’s important to stay hydrated.

2. Training and intensity - you want to adjust your load and intensity after your sports massage to allow yourself to recover optimally post massage. Ideally dial your training down for 24 hours or go for an active recovery approach such as a walk, gentle cycle, mobility or movement before retiring back to normal training.

3. Sleep - focus on getting a quality 7-9 hours of sleep post massage to help you in your recovery (this applies daily 😉). This will help with muscle repair, pain, soreness as well as helping you mentally recover too.

4. Stretching and light mobility to help your body stay loose and mobile after your session. Gentle stretching and movement and any recommendations from your massage therapist.

5. Plan your next appointment. Building a consistent routine with your massage and recovery will help you manage pain, niggles, injuries and helping you stay feeling and moving great!

Save these for later and if you have any questions pop us a message!

Mobility is great to train alongside your running.

For anyone looking to get stronger, improve run specifics, work through niggles and injuries, or simply move better for their every day training and lifestyle.

Mobility uses a variety of movement types whether it’s dynamic drills, active range work, or core stability. You’re training muscles and joints for flexibility, range, strength (at different ranges), control, and efficiency.

Why is this important?
Running is repetitive. If you’re moving in one pattern, you’re more likely to develop imbalances or overload certain areas as you are building your training. Mobility helps by taking your body through a variety of movements and ranges (and building strength in those ranges), improving stability, and reinforcing movement patterns you don’t always train on a run. The goal is to become strong and efficient in a variety of movements that help with your running and fine tuning specific movements you may not always train in other sessions. In turn you will find you can handle training loads, higher volumes and adapt.

The fun part of training mobility is experimenting with movement, building confidence, control, and strength in positions that support your running. Use mobility as a tool for prehab and rehab, helping you stay pain free and consistent with your training.

How?
You can join us here at ETL where we have a MOVE class every week as part of our Group PT program, focusing specifically on this. Or work with us 1:1 and we’ll tailor mobility directly into your running programme.

Questions?
Send us a message and we can chat about anything mobility, training and running-related to support you 🫶🏼

The last thing we want in Classics… is for you to feel like you’re just doing the same thing on repeat.

Every four weeks, we review the programme as a coaching team and reflect on what’s been happening in sessions. The feedback I get while coaching, what people are enjoying, where things are working well, and where we can make small changes to keep things moving forward.

Some exercises stay in, so we can keep building confidence and see progress over time. Others change, so you get the chance to try something new and keep things feeling fresh.

Everything we do is adapted to the person in front of us. There’s always an option that works for you, whether you’re just getting started, coming back after a break, or building on what you’ve already done.

The focus stays the same.

Building and maintaining strength, keeping your joints moving well, improving balance and helping you feel more confident in how you move day to day.

That’s what supports you outside of the gym. Getting up and down from the floor. Moving around the house with ease. Feeling steady, capable, and able to keep doing the things you enjoy.

And when training feels varied, at the right level, and something you can get stuck into… it’s much easier to keep coming.

That’s a big part of why this group works so well.

People feel comfortable, supported, and are happy to give things a go and encourage each other along the way.

We do currently have a waitlist for Classics, but if you’d like to be part of the next group, drop me a message and I’ll get you on the list. I’d love to add another Classics team to the timetable.

I’ve also opened two additional PT spaces of you prefer to train 1:1, or have a specific goal to work towards.

You had every intention of training today, but the day changed… sleep was off, work ran over, or you weren’t feeling 100%.

Then there’s that little feeling of guilt… like you should still be doing it, or that missing today has ruined everything.

All of that happens. It’s normal, and it happened to me this week.

That guilty feeling usually shows up because you care. You want to stick to your plans and make progress.

But guilt and shame don’t always lead to the best decision making.

Sometimes it’s worth taking a step back and asking… what do I actually need today, what can I do, and how can I adapt this so I still move forward?

It might still be doing your planned session. It might be a lighter version. It might just be getting out for a short walk. Or it might be a proper rest day.

It’s not about ignoring that feeling. It’s about hearing it, reflecting on why today has changed, and adapting the plan around it.

This is a big part of what we work on with our clients… not just what to do, but how to make the right choices for you on any given day, with both today and the bigger picture in mind.

So you can work with your life, not against it, move forward without guilt, see progress in your fitness and health, and build a better relationship with exercise over time.

Your first personal training session with ETL is designed to lay a strong foundation and help you move towards your health and fitness goals.

The focus of your first session is simple:

to understand where you’re at right now, what you’re capable of, what your goals are and where you want to get to, so we can build your programme and coach you in a way that supports you in the best way for you.

Here’s how it looks:

👋 When you arrive, you’ll be met by your coach (and occasionally the gym dog)

We’ll take a few minutes to show you around so you feel comfortable and settled straight away

💪 Your coach will then guide you through a warm up and then a full body session, focusing on the core movement patterns

Everything is tailored to you based on what we already know from our initial chats, but it’s also gives us a chance to see how you move and what you’re capable of right now

💬 We’ll chat too… about you, your life and lifestyle, your goals, and your “why” and get to know you more.

This helps us build your training programme to fit around your life, work for you and support your long-term health, as well as your shorter term goals.

⏭️ Before you leave, we’ll talk through what’s next, get you booked in for your next sessions (or your weekly slot) and suggest group sessions that may be best for you.

After your session, we’ll finalise your programme, set you up on our coaching app, and add you into our client community so you’ve got coach and community support around you from day one

So, if you’ve been thinking about getting started and having personal training, this is your sign.

DM “welcome” and let’s have a chat.

Over the last few days, the same frustration has come up a few times while I’ve been coaching:

“I should be able to do this better than I am.”

Usually after trying a new movement, or something that just hasn’t quite clicked yet, especially as some of my clients are newer or getting back into training.

And I get it… when something doesn’t feel smooth straight away, it’s easy to think you’re doing it wrong.

But you’re not, most movements just won’t feel natural on day one.

They’re learned. They take practice, time and patience.

At ETL, we’re not chasing perfect reps on day one. We’re learning new skills, building strong movement, creating habits and routines… building something that holds up long term.

That might mean slowing things down, breaking a movement into parts, giving cues that help you feel it or understand it better, and repeating it (literally putting in the repetitions) until it starts to click.

Confidence doesn’t come from getting it right straight away. It comes from fully understanding what you’re doing and why, and seeing it improve over time.

If something feels awkward at first, that’s not a sign you’re failing.

It’s a sign you’re learning something new.

And when you take the time to learn it properly, it starts to feel more natural, more confident, and it carries into everything else you do.

One of the reasons I strength train in my 40’s…

I did something really silly over the Easter weekend.

I was excited to see one of our posts go live. My phone buzzed, I pulled it out to have a look… completely forgot I was walking down a hill full of rabbit holes.

Within a few seconds I was flat on my face.

I did what most of us would do. Straight back up, quick brush down, carry on like nothing happened. Inside… absolutely mortified.

Over the next couple of days, the aches came and went. Bit stiff, bit sore, but nothing major. Touch wood, I’ve bounced back pretty quickly.

But it did get me thinking… this could have been a lot worse.

One of the reasons I keep strength training now is exactly for moments like that.

As we get older, things like muscle mass, strength, balance and bone density really matter. Not for the gym, but for everyday life.

Strength training helps maintain bone density, which becomes more important as we age. It helps you hold onto muscle, which supports your joints and gives you a bit more resilience when things don’t go to plan. And over time, it improves balance and coordination, which reduces the chances of a fall in the first place.

It doesn’t make you invincible. I’ve just proven that.

But it does stack the odds in your favour.

What stood out to me wasn’t the fall, it was how quickly I recovered from it.

That’s the bit most people don’t see when they think about training.

It’s not just about how you look, or what you can lift.

It’s about staying capable, staying independent, and giving yourself the best chance of handling whatever life throws at you… even if that’s just a rabbit hole on a hill 🐇
