😶 National Nonspeaking/Nonverbal Awareness Day at ICH 😶
💁♂️ On the 30th of September, it is National Nonspeaking/Nonverbal Awareness Day, a time when we can reflect, honour, and uplift individuals who communicate without words.
🗺️ Nonverbal and nonspeaking people navigate a world that’s been built around verbal communication. By spotlighting their struggles, we challenge misconceptions, foster empathy, and champion true inclusivity.
❗ Common Challenges Faced by Nonverbal Individuals:
· Every aspect of daily life, from expressing basic needs to feeling fully included in their communities.
· Difficulty communicating even basic needs, wants, and emotions through spoken language, which can lead to frustration and misunderstandings.
· Limited ability to initiate and maintain conversations, impacting peer relationships and overall well-being.
· Problems conveying symptoms or discomfort to medical professionals, potentially resulting in inadequate care.
· Sensory sensitivities and overload caused by heightened responses to stimuli such as sound, touch, or light, which can trigger anxiety, meltdowns, or withdrawal.
🙌 At In Caring Hands, every person’s way of communicating is respected and celebrated. Our dedicated team of carers are trained in alternative communication methods such as:
· Tac-Pac tactile symbols and sensory story prompts
· Switches, buttons and bespoke technology-aided devices
· Makaton signing, PECS and personalised symbol boards
· Communication books to share each person’s choices and achievements
🧏 We listen, learn and adapt to unique cues because every gesture, glance and touch matters.
