😶 National Nonspeaking/Nonverbal Awareness Day at ICH 😶

💁‍♂️ On the 30th of September, it is National Nonspeaking/Nonverbal Awareness Day, a time when we can reflect, honour, and uplift individuals who communicate without words.

🗺️ Nonverbal and nonspeaking people navigate a world that’s been built around verbal communication. By spotlighting their struggles, we challenge misconceptions, foster empathy, and champion true inclusivity.

❗ Common Challenges Faced by Nonverbal Individuals:

· Every aspect of daily life, from expressing basic needs to feeling fully included in their communities.

· Difficulty communicating even basic needs, wants, and emotions through spoken language, which can lead to frustration and misunderstandings.

· Limited ability to initiate and maintain conversations, impacting peer relationships and overall well-being.

· Problems conveying symptoms or discomfort to medical professionals, potentially resulting in inadequate care.

· Sensory sensitivities and overload caused by heightened responses to stimuli such as sound, touch, or light, which can trigger anxiety, meltdowns, or withdrawal.

🙌 At In Caring Hands, every person’s way of communicating is respected and celebrated. Our dedicated team of carers are trained in alternative communication methods such as:

· Tac-Pac tactile symbols and sensory story prompts

· Switches, buttons and bespoke technology-aided devices

· Makaton signing, PECS and personalised symbol boards

· Communication books to share each person’s choices and achievements

🧏 We listen, learn and adapt to unique cues because every gesture, glance and touch matters.

🖼️ Supporting health, comfort, and understanding with ICH 🖼️

🫴 At In Caring Hands (ICH) in Cornwall, we provide specialist care for young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). Our devoted team understands that everyday ailments such as headaches or migraines can be overwhelming when you can’t verbally communicate how you feel.

🤯 Migraine Awareness Week runs from the 22nd to 28th September 2025, so we felt it was a good time to look at this topic. Migraines aren’t just “bad headaches”, they involve throbbing pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and can last for hours or days. For someone who can’t use words to say “I’m unwell,” their distress can easily be misdiagnosed and be incorrectly untreated.

🔎 At ICH, we spot non-verbal cues through:

Regular comfort checks and pain-scale aids using facial expression cards and body language

Close collaboration with families and healthcare professionals to adjust care plans promptly

Logging subtle changes in behaviour, restlessness, rocking or grimacing.

📊 Our carers respond immediately when distress is spotted. We use quiet, dimly lit rooms with soft music to ease sensory overload. Where appropriate, we will give gentle massage or cool compresses, and have hydration routines tailored to each individual. And we will always make a medical referral where appropriate.

✔️ This proactive approach means fewer missed signs, faster relief, and happier, more comfortable days.

🪴 Windowsill gardens bringing nature indoors at ICH 🪴

🌱 At our respite bungalow, and daycare centre in Cornwall we transform sunny ledges into mini herb and flower gardens.

🌷 Our service users with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) delight in feeling soil between their fingers, sniffing fresh basil or lavender, and watching tiny shoots unfurl day by day. This hands-on gardening promotes sensory engagement, calms anxiety, and gives everyone a sense of achievement as they nurture their plants.

🏡 At In Caring Hands (ICH) life is about so much more than routines. We design days full of discovery, joy, and comfort, because connecting with nature, even on a windowsill, can brighten minds and nourish wellbeing.

💖 Love bringing smiles to young people’s faces? Grow your career with In Caring Hands and help us cultivate these special moments. Discover opportunities on our website: https://www.in-caring-hands.co.uk/learning-disability-services/

🖼️ A picture says a thousand words at ICH 🖼️

📸 At In Caring Hands (ICH), we love printing our favourite snaps and here’s why - Printed photographs invite our service users to feel the paper, trace the edges, and point to familiar faces or beloved places we’ve explored together. This hands-on experience lifts moods, nurtures creativity, and fills their days with joy, especially when we turn those prints into colourful collages or simple photo albums together.

🏡 Life at our profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) respite care bungalow or day care service in Cornwall is about more than just meeting daily needs. We design days that are fulfilling, fun, and comfortable because every young person deserves experiences that celebrate who they are.

Here at In Caring Hands, we don’t just sit around all day! When young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) come to our bungalow for respite care, we have all kinds of fun activities going on.

🌻 Recently we were making these fabulous flower catchers, introducing bright colours and interesting shapes to our service users, and helping them create something beautiful. Preparing for the exercise, our manager Emma went around the local area, looking for wild, hedgerow flowers to use.

💮 On her way back to the bungalow, she passed our local florist, Gwen’s Garden Flowers and Blooms: https://www.facebook.com/Gwensgardenflorist. She took a chance, and went in, to see if Gwen had any flowers that were past their best, that our people could use.

🌹Gwen went above and beyond for us, preparing two beautiful bouquets, which we had so much fun with. Plus she is happy to provide more flowers, if we need them for future craft activities. We’re so grateful - thanks Gwen!

🌷 We love being part of a community that supports us like this. If you’re local to St Austell, and can support our activities, or you have a venue we could visit, then drop us a line!
