So I’m going to start this by saying I AM NOT A TONGUE TIE EXPERT, and there is SO MUCH more to say on this subject than a) I am knowledgeable enough about and b) will fit in this little space! But, what I have seen more and more in clinical practice is babies with or who have had tongue ties struggling with the development of their physical skills, and ultimately coming to see me because of delayed rolling, crawling, sitting etc.
💭 Why?
Oral restrictions (tongue ties) can cause tension throughout the whole body - because the tongue is connected to fascia that goes all the way to the toes! This tight fascia affects the way in which the body (and muscles!) can function.
💭 What does this mean?
A VERY common picture is that babies with tongue ties and tension HATE tummy time. Have you ever tried lying on your tummy, with a tight, probably painful neck, and lift it up against gravity?! Add torticollis into the mix too (difficulty in turning their head both ways) … you get the picture! 💥
This hatred of tummy time usually then results in an inability to roll - babies generally roll from front to back first so if they don’t spend time on their tummy then rolling ain’t gonna happen! ❌
So it’s easy to see how these babies end up not achieving their physical skills when expected!
💭 What can you do?
See an expert! As said earlier I am definitely not an expert (but have learnt SO much! I’m fortunate to work alongside some amazing, knowledgeable professionals who can help with all things tongue tie and tension related! The first step is addressing these issues, whilst having an awareness of the role physiotherapy can play too.
There is so much more to talk about on this subject …. Maybe for another day - my brain is fried just thinking about it 😅
