“She loves her favourite chair… she’s comfortable.”
In my work as a care professional, that’s something I’ve heard more than once.
But here’s the part many families don’t realise:
As we age, we lose the natural padding that cushions our bones.
So when an elderly person sits for long periods, even in a soft recliner, it can become bone on surface.
Foam cushions compress.
Memory foam “bottoms out.” (pun intended!)
Even some gel cushions flatten under weight.
When pressure stays in one place too long:
• Blood flow reduces
• Skin breaks down
• A small red patch can turn into a serious wound
And it can happen faster than people think.
🚩 If redness doesn’t fade when pressed (blanch), that’s a warning sign.
🚩 Pressure injuries start beneath the skin, before they are visible. Regular skin integrity checks are imperative for those with reduced mobility or anyone who spends a long time in one position.
🚩 If a cushion “goes flat,” it’s not protecting.
Soft doesn’t always mean safe.
Pressure sores are often preventable with the right knowledge, equipment and regular repositioning.
If your loved one spends most of their day in one chair, and you’re unsure what to look for — I’m always happy to help 💛
As part of my service as a self-employed carer, I can carry out regular skin integrity checks and work proactively to prevent pressure sores before they start.
Prevention is always better than treatment.
