World Diabetes Day 🍁

Shout out to all our incredible families who are affected by diabetes. It is such a challenging diagnosis to deal with.

Is there something you wish you had known about diabetes during your pregnancy? Any words of wisdom for people also experiencing diabetes in pregnancy?

😷 COVID update 😷

Following an increase in cases of COVID-19 in the East Sussex area, fluid resistant surgical face masks (FRSMs) are now to be used within all clinical settings for staff, patients and visitors, to maintain patient and staff safety.

This is a Sussex-wide decision by the Sussex Integrated System.

Happy appreciation day to all our wonderful Student Midwives at East Sussex Healthcare Trust. It is a pleasure to work alongside you, help you learn the ropes and support you to become the midwives you want to be!

One of my favourite experiences as a student was providing continuity of care to a family having their first baby. I now get to care for them 4 years on with their second arriving very soon!

Student Midwives - cherish every minute. Ask all the questions and enjoy the time you have to just learn, be present and take on board all the different ways of working πŸ‘©β€πŸ«πŸ‘©β€πŸŽ“πŸ‘©πŸ»β€βš•οΈ

Parents to be - enjoy the extra support you receive from students. They want nothing more than to make you feel like superstars ⭐

International Day of the Midwife πŸ’–

It is common knowledge that midwives all across the UK are facing challenges. From staffing to paperwork to the ever increasing medical complications that people have in pregnancy.

That said, we absolutely love our jobs. From meeting you in early pregnancy or when you transfer to us, to discharging you as a new family, settling in to parenthood. It is an absolute honour to care for you through all the ups and downs, share the happiness and comfort you through any tears.

We would love it if you could share any feedback about the midwives who have cared for you or that you know. It really makes us smile to hear your stories 🍁

What is going on? 🍁

You may have noticed we have been a bit quiet on here lately! Since November, we haven't been able to provide labour and birth care to you all due to staffing challenges.

You may have also noticed that our fellow continuity teams, Ivy and Lighthouse are now back up and running in full continuity style. Unfortunately, Maple Team are still unable to provide care for you during your birth.

We endeavor to provide continuity during your appointments in pregnancy and once you have had your baby, however, please be aware that you may see other lovely midwives during this time if we are unavailable.

Nothing else is changing, we just have some more support on board from our fellow colleagues in the core teams when we need it.

We hope that you understand that the 4 of us cannot be everywhere, although we do try our best! We love our jobs as diabetes midwives and will always do what we can to make your experience as positive as possible.

Sending all our best wishes,

Hannah, Molly, Steph & Shara πŸπŸ’–

β—οΈπŸŸDue to a listeria outbreak linked to smoked fish, people at higher risk of serious infection (including people who are pregnant) should only eat smoked fish products that have been thoroughly cooked.

When cooking smoked fish products at home, make sure they are steaming hot all the way through.

🌻WORLD AUTISM ACCEPTANCE WEEK🌻

28TH MARCH-3RD APRIL 2022

This week is World Autism Acceptance Week. Not many people understand what it’s actually like to be autistic- the strengths it can bring and how hard life can be sometimes. It's important that no-one feels judged for being autistic. Autistic people just want to be understood, supported and accepted in society. No-one should have to wait months or even years for a diagnosis or vital help and support. And that’s why society needs to change.

ESHT Maternity are supporting World Autism Acceptance Week and are working hard to improve our services for autistic people. If you feel you need further support in regards to autism or neurodiversity please contact your midwife. Information, guidance and support can also be found at the National Autistic Society (autism.org.uk) 🌻

Our wonderful Molly 🍁

You can find our Midwife Molly in Bexhill Health Centre on a Wednesday morning, Hailsham Health Centre every other Wednesday afternoon and diabetes clinic on a Thursday in Eastbourne.

'Hi, my name is Molly, I've been a qualified midwife for just over 3 years and have spent 2 years working in the obstetric unit at the Conquest, and the last year as a maple midwife 🍁. I have a real passion for improving care in all aspects of maternity and improving the care we give to birthing people with Diabetes, we have come such a long way in a year and I look forward to seeing where the next year takes us!'

We have been pretty quiet on here recently, working super hard!

We wanted to re-introduce ourselves to you all, so you know a little bit of what to expect if you are cared by our team.

"Hiya! My name is Hannah (the team call me Han) and I care for the Hastings and rural area of East Sussex. You'll find me in Mirrlees Ward on a Tuesday morning and the pregnancy diabetes clinic on a Wednesday afternoon. You may hear from me to tell you the news of your diagnosis.

I have gained a real interest in diabetes since the team began and enjoy providing personalised care to my caseload. Getting to know the 'you' behind your pregnancy and medical care is important to me. Having diabetes in pregnancy can be incredibly difficult both physically and mentally, so we will work together to ensure that it is as minimal stress as possible!

I don't wish diabetes on anyone, but if we do have to meet, I look forward to it 🍁"
