In our next week of lessons we will be working with the throat centre which means we will be working with postures and breathing techniques which open the throat neck and shoulders.

The Bridge posture is perfect for this. The above graphic beautifully explains the physical benefits. In addition the slight constriction in the throat massages the thyroid and parathyroid glands and stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system.

With regular practice at a subtler level as the body opens it creates a wonderful sense of harmony and flow through the body. It creates a connection between head and heart and body and mind. As a result you gain a great sense of inner strength and improved ability to tune in to and communicate what really matters to you.

This week we will be working with the anahata chakra (heart centre).

The Weaving Cat and Parsvottanasana (Charity) postures really stretch and open the muscles around the chest activating the heart as well as bringing a suppleness to the spine and hips.

This week we are working on boosting our energy levels with postures and breathing that stimulate the digestive system and boost our inner fire.

One of the amazing postures for this is the Bhima posture the strongest of the warriors. It is strengthening and energising as it stimulates the abdominal muscles and the whole of your digestive system. This week we are working on bringing ease and flexibility to the hips, pelvis and lower back. Physically the hips and lower back can become tight from sitting too long or after a long walk or running.

At a deeper level we can store stress and negative emotions in this area leading to tightness.

The runner stretch is a wonderful way to open up the muscles and to bring a wonderful sense of ease.

The first picture is a more gentle version to allow the muscles to relax before going on to a deeper stretch and is beneficial if the deeper stretch is not for you, particularly if you have issues with your hips and lower back.

The second picture is a wonderful deeper stretch. Gently pulling the lower abdominal muscles in under the navel enhances the stretch.

Always use extra support under the knees if you need to.

Dru Yoga Classes in South Manchester. Currently classes on Monday and Wednesday Evenings 6 p.m.-7.15 p.m.in my studio in Sale

Tuesday mornings and evenings 9.30 a.m.-10.45 a.m. and 7.30 p.m. -8.45 p.m. also in my studio.

Friday Mornings 9.15 a.m.-10.30 a.m. at the Hope Centre Hamden Road Sale. Β£8 per session Β£35 for a block of 5 sessions.
