☀️ Vitamin D – important for your health this winter

From October to March, sunlight in the UK isn’t strong enough for our bodies to make enough vitamin D. To stay healthy, the NHS recommends taking a daily 10 microgram (400 IU) vitamin D supplement during these months.

💪 Why vitamin D matters:
Helps keep bones and teeth strong
Supports muscle strength and reduces the risk of falls
Plays a role in a healthy immune system
Helps prevent conditions such as rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults

🥛 Vitamin D is found in small amounts in foods like oily fish, eggs, and fortified products, but most people won’t get enough from diet alone, which is why supplements are recommended.

🛒 Vitamin D supplements are widely available from pharmacies and supermarkets. Avoid taking more than 100 micrograms a day unless advised by a healthcare professional.

Have you had your NHS bowel cancer screening test yet?

If you’re between 52-74 and registered with a GP you will automatically be sent your screening kit through the post every two years. It’s easy to do, and you can complete it yourself in the privacy of your own bathroom.

If you think you’re eligible and haven’t had a kit sent to you, you can call the bowel cancer screening helpline on 0800 707 6060.

Bowel cancer screening finds bowel cancer before you’ve noticed any symptoms, which means it’s much easier to treat.

🧘‍♀️ Happy World Yoga Day – 22 February 🧘‍♂️

Today is World Yoga Day, a global celebration of yoga’s benefits for body, mind and spirit. Yoga has been shown to help improve strength and flexibility, reduce stress, support mental wellbeing, and promote overall health — all of which tie in with our focus on holistic patient wellbeing.

Whether you’ve practised yoga for years or are curious to try it for the first time, moving gently and mindfully can be a great way to support physical and emotional wellbeing. Even short sessions of breathing, stretching or meditation can make a difference to your day.

✨ Tips to get started:
• Start with gentle poses and breathing exercises
• Look for beginner yoga classes in your community
• Use online videos or apps for guided sessions

Yoga isn’t just exercise — it’s a way to connect movement with mindfulness and self-care.

If you have any health conditions or concerns, speak with a clinician before starting a new physical activity.

Wishing everyone a peaceful and healthy World Yoga Day! 🧘‍♀️💙

🍷 Drink Wine Day — Tuesday 18th February 🍷

Today marks Drink Wine Day, a light-hearted occasion that celebrates one of the world’s oldest drinks. For some people, enjoying a glass of wine can be part of socialising or relaxing — but it’s important to remember that alcohol should always be enjoyed in moderation.

🍇 Alcohol & your health
Drinking more than recommended can affect both physical and mental health over time. The NHS advises that to keep health risks low, adults should not regularly drink more than 14 units of alcohol per week, spread over several days.

📘 If you’d like support with cutting down, the NHS has clear, practical guidance here:

🩺 Need extra support?
If you feel alcohol is becoming difficult to manage — or you’d like professional help to stop drinking — our practice can support you with referrals.

In Salford, we can refer patients to ACHIEVE Salford, a specialist service offering confidential support for alcohol and substance use:

🤝 Other helpful support organisations:
• Alcoholics Anonymous – https://www.alcoholics-anonymous.org.uk/
• Al-Anon – support for families and friends: https://al-anonuk.org.uk/
• Alcohol Change UK – https://alcoholchange.org.uk/
• Addiction Family Support – https://addictionfamilysupport.org.uk/
• SMART Recovery UK – https://smartrecovery.org.uk/smart-recovery-programme/

💬 If you’re concerned about your own drinking — or someone else’s — please remember you’re not alone, and help is available. You can contact the practice to discuss support options in confidence.

🚨URGENT APPEAL 🚨
We are really short of toiletries at the moment, except for shower gel.

We offer toiletries alongside our food parcels to help see them through the crisis they are facing. We try to have a stock of toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, deodorant, soap and shower gel.

If you are able to help, donations can be dropped off in supermarket collection tubs or brought straight to our warehouse at 4 Kansas Avenue, M50 2GL.

If you aren't able to drop any off they can also be donated through the Give Today platform that can be found here: https://givetoday.co.uk/salfordfoodbank/

Wishing you and your families a blessed and peaceful Ramadan. 🌙✨
