Stroke Association North West

Stroke Association North West Every day in the North West, people wake up to the catastrophic impact of a stroke. Stroke Association believe in life after stroke.

We're here to help them, and the people close to them, find strength through support. That is why we support stroke survivors to make the best recovery they can. It's why we campaign for better stroke prevention and care. And it’s why we fund research to develop new treatments and ways of preventing stroke. We are a charity and we rely on your support to change the lives of people affected by stroke and reduce the number of people who are struck down by this devastating disease.

We continue to work in partnership with clinical colleagues to provide personalised care for people affected by stroke.
We recently delivered learning sessions at the Stroke Team training day at the Countess of Chester hospital.
You know we like to amplify patients voices and we believe our shared learning should always include patient’s perspectives.
Stroke survivor, Mandy, and her daughter Amy, pictured here, shared their experiences with stroke team staff, particularly regarding the hidden effects of stroke and emotional impact.
Thank you Mandy for sharing and wanting to play your part in support for others.

A stroke is sudden and shocking and affects every part of your life. Most people who've had a stroke will experience some kind of emotional change afterwards.
For more information about emotional changes after stroke, see this video on our You Tube channel here https://youtu.be/5tyUrCA_FUY

A huge thank you to Joey from Clayton-le-Woods and his mum, who wanted to give back to the amazing people who looked after her when she suffered numerous strokes.

Together they walked to the top of Rivington pike during during May and raised £360 for the Stroke Association

You can still sponsor them both here too - https://www.gofundme.com/f/eeabqn-stroke-awareness-month

Thanks so much to you both!

Did you know?
Childhood stroke can affect babies (including in the womb), children and young people. Several hundred children are diagnosed with a stroke every year in the UK.
We might have forgotten to tell you about a new print guide that will soon be available for parents and carers of children who have recently had a stroke!
The new guide ‘My child has had a stroke’, was co-created with a group of six parents whose children have experienced stroke.
The group of parents played a central part in developing the content, format and feel of the new guide. They told us they would value a simpler, shorter print guide with a warmer tone, colour photos and quotes from other families with lived experience. The parents’ feedback also led to the new guide being A5-sized, as parents felt this would allow them to keep it handy in their bags in the early days and weeks at hospital and appointments.
They wanted it to be clearer about where to go for more information and support when they felt ready. It now includes links to our website, where we have more detailed information on causes and effects of childhood stroke, and signposting to our Childhood Stroke Support Team. See here to find support, ways to connect with other parent and useful resources to help you and your family make sense of your child’s stroke. https://www.stroke.org.uk/stroke/childhood

Childhood stroke can affect babies (including in the womb), children and young people. More than 400 children are diagnosed with strokes every year in the UK.

Things we love to see for !

Lovely to see members of the Pennine Lancs stroke choir performing on the stroke ward at Pendle Community Hospital this week.

Staff and patients all joined in to make this a truly wonderful afternoon for everyone.

A lovely moment was when the ward manager thanked members of the choir for being so inspirational - many of whom have previously been treated at the ward!

Thank you!

A bit more working in partnership, this time for raising awareness of the support available after stroke AND raising funds, last week in Lancashire! It must be 🤩
Stroke Association staff and volunteers were supporting staff from the stroke acute care and rehab wards at both Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley& South Ribble hospital. There was a bike riding challenge, raffles and cake stall. Staff and volunteers rotated throughout the time period, continuing to see and support patients, family members and hospital visitors and to keep pedalling!.

Did we mention its at all?😁 As we continue our (much needed) daily work supporting people across the North West, and influencing for better stroke care, we still try to get connected in our local communities too. We aim to raise awareness of the devastating impact of stroke, and the support available. (and yes we probably did mention too!) Thanks Halton Libraries
