Mental health is so important and knowing self-care strategies that work for you can help keep you healthy.

With the news that 44% of people in the UK describe themselves as 'stressed' with 27% of those admitting they are regularly 'close to breaking point', it has become even more crucial to spread effective information about how to manage stress.1) Do an emotional needs audit

What a glorious spring morning! The sun was shining. The lambs were frolicking in the field. The grass was green and glistening with morning dew reflecting the sunlight.

Yet, rewind a few days and the rain was being lashed against the windows.

Spring is here - and I love the seasons. There are so many powerful messages within nature.

Take this picture for example - there are several characters if you like - you have the sheep, the trees, the sunshine. Each one is doing something different.

For the sheep - they have just given birth to new life. Lambs are here after months of growth inside the womb, and hard work and labour to bring them into the world. Now, a new kind of work begins as the sheep feed their lambs, and keep them warm and safe.

Yet the trees - their branches are still barren. In fact they might look a little dead! But...if you take a closer look, you will see tiny buds forming at the tips of each branch, just waiting to burst forth with vibrant spring green colour. And, who knows what the roots are doing as the earth warms.

The sun - not having to compete with the clouds today. It has always been there, throughout the winter, even when we could not see it or feel its warmth. Now here it is, glorious and giving warmth and light to the earth below.

What does this picture mean to you? Perhaps you feel like a sheep or a tree or the sun... or maybe you have seen something else in the picture.

And why does any of this matter as a Human Givens Psychotherapist? Because metaphors and stories are powerful, and can change lives. And because we all have our own unique story that is still being written.......

So, asking for help can be the bravest thing you can do, and also one of the hardest. Especially when trying to find a therapist - after all, what type of therapy do you get?
If you need support with your physical health - you go to a doctor and they take it from there, referring you to specialists if you need it.
But what about mental health?
Do you go for CBT, Person Centred, Humanistic, EMDR, Psycho-analysis or one of the many other types? Human Givens perhaps.....
So many options and it can be bewildering!
My advice?
Make sure that the branch of therapy you decide to try, is registered with some sort of governing body.

Human Givens Psychotherapy is fully accredited by the Professional Standards Authority, and as a Trainee, I hold Professional Liability Insurance and have regular meetings with a supervisor.

Go on - be brave. If you need help, don't be afraid to ask.

I have a confession to make - sometimes I watch animated kids movies by Disney! AND sometimes, they have something very profound within them.

This clip really struck me on this occasion, because it shows the importance of listening to people and being with them in their reality and experience. It is only when we meet someone where they are in that moment, that we can help them find a way to feeling better.
This is one of the most important foundations of effective therapy, and a key tenet of the Human Givens Approach.

It is ok to be sad. And when supporting someone who is sad or upset, we need to meet them there and be with them, rather than unintentionally disregarding their lived experience in an effort to make them happy.

So very true. Certainly there is a lot of expectation for the “stiff upper lip” of the British. Then there is the social media pressure of seemingly prefect lives. And yet….. we all have struggles. Different struggles. Varied struggles. Unique struggles. So…..
Be kind
To yourself and to others.

Oh so true!

Human givens practitioners offer practical, solution-focused help that deals with mental and emotional distress in the here and now.

Their psychotherapy training ensures that they have a sound body of evidence-based knowledge and the proven skills to help both adults and children as quickly as possible with a wide variety of emotional and behavioural difficulties.

When our emotional needs are not being met, or when our resources are used incorrectly, we suffer considerable distress and so can those around us.

A human givens practitioner, therefore, will focus on helping their client to identify their unmet emotional needs and empower them to meet these needs by activating their own natural resources in new ways. To do this they use a variety of up-to-date, proven techniques aimed at problem solving.

The human givens approach identifies attention as one of our vital emotional needs – both giving and receiving it is a form a nutrition. Meeting our emotional needs well and in balance, defends us against mental ill health. So, by taking a brief moment out of your day to do a good deed or perform a small act of kindness you will not only bring happiness, warmth, care and compassion into someone else’s day, you will also help to meet both yours and their emotional need for attention – which is a very rewarding act of kindness in itself.

So, emotional needs - that is the difference between a rock, a plant, a dog and a human being. What might those needs be? and how do we go about getting them met?

25/04/2021

I promised a post about what Human Givens and being Human is all about. Work got a bit busy, but here we are.
What is the difference between a rock, a plant, a dog and a human?
A rock - well, it needs nothing from the environment to survive.
Plants - a bit more complex. Sunlight, water, nutrients from the soil and then you are good to grow.
A dog - more complex again. Needs all of your physical stuff from the environment, plus a pack and all its social relations.
And then....... there is us - humans. How are we different? For us to thrive and grow, we need our physical needs to be met - sleep, water, good food, movement. AND we need emotional needs to be met.
What might those emotional needs be..........?

“That looks heavy.” said Rabbit.
“What’s that?” asked Bear.
“Your thoughts.” replied Rabbit. “Let me hold them with you for a while.”
“Then we’ll both have heavy thoughts.” said Bear.
“No.” said Rabbit. “Between the two of us, they shouldn’t weigh near as much.”
