Our Badger Sett wrote to David Attenborough for his 100th birthday, and we were thrilled to receive a note back thanking us for his birthday wishes.

Our busy St John Ambulance volunteer, Kat Brawn, is helping to provide essential first aid cover at this weekend's Ten Tors.

Ten Tors is an annual event, organised by the British Army, in which some 2,400 teenagers in 40 teams hike up to 55 miles across the rugged terrain of Dartmoor.

Events like this can't happen without well organised first aid cover, at scale. This is what St John Ambulance volunteers do, along with cover at larger and smaller events, teaching first aid and providing a thriving youth service for 4-17 year olds (Kat is also a youth leader)

Kat has volunteered for the night shift! We wish her all the best!

Hi,

Tim from our Salisbury and South Wilts Network is going to cycle the 'Tour de Trowbridge, a 78 mile event on 31 May to raise money for St John Ambulance. This year St John Ambulance is one of the Charity Partners for the event.

If you'd like you can visit his JustGiving page here https://www.justgiving.com/page/tim-watts-1?utm_medium=FA&utm_source=CL

Or you can enter too! (shorter distances and more moderate discomfort are available. . .) - google 'Tour de Trowbridge'

Kat and Tim had a lovely time at River Bourne Community Farm yesterday. We met farm visitors in the morning, talked about SJA and first aid, and did CPR and choking demonstrations, and then in the afternoon we ran a free, '3 Ways to Save A Life' awareness session in the barn for volunteer staff.

And we got to meet Casper the 10 year old Turkey!

Many thanks to Reuben for looking after us and Saje for setting it up.

Would you know what to do if someone you love had stopped breathing and responding, was choking or was bleeding badly?

If you'd like a free, emergency first aid awareness session for a community group in South Wiltshire, message us here or mail tim.watts@sja.org.uk

Would you know what to do if a loved one was not responding and had stopped breathing?

We'll be at River Bourne Community Farm tomorrow, Saturday 1 May, 10 am - 1pm. Do drop in, find out more, and have a go at CPR and using a defibrillator (as well as visiting the lovely farm animals!)

Thank you for having our volunteers as your casualties! 💚

If you were around the Cathedral this morning you may have noticed some commotion… 🚒

Two of our volunteer emergency responders were kindly invited by Salisbury Fire Station to play casualties for a large, multi-agency exercise taking place in the Cathedral’s spire today. Our volunteers were kitted up with prosthetics, covered in fake blood and embraced their best acting skills before being winched down the spire to safety.

We are proud to have continued working relationships with our local fire station which helps us to improve multi-agency working in our respective roles.

Are you part of a local organisation, emergency service or youth group and would like to explore options for training together? Pop us a message!

Last weekend, two of our volunteers travelled to London in our Salisbury-based treatment centre to join approximately 1,500 other St John volunteers working on the London Marathon 🏃

Based at the Royal Mint, we had a brilliant view of iconic London landmarks, and were able to cheer and hand out sweets to runners in between treating patients.

It was a great opportunity to meet other volunteers from across the country, as well as work with other organisations and health care workers including doctors and cold water immersion specialists (see image 5!) - a practise fairly new to running events in the UK.

In total, we treated just under 30 patients at our treatment centre alone, many of whom were able to return to the event and make it to the finish line! 🏅

As a network, we also supported three other events this weekend locally including the Figsbury Challenge, St George’s Day and Fonthill Charity Garden Opening… a very busy but enjoyable weekend for our volunteers all around!

This afternoon, two of our volunteers were in attendance at the Figsbury Challenge which is held annually at Winterbourne Earls Primary School. The sun was shining and everyone had a lovely day with all participants making it over the finish line! 🌞

Earlier this month our volunteers were pleased to provide first aid cover for Salisbury 10 Mile Road Race, our largest in-Network event of the year.

Colleagues from Devizes and Central Wiltshire, including a number of cadets, helped us to provide a team of 18 strong, covering a variety of roles including Event Manager, Emergency Ambulance Crew, Emergency Responders, Community First Aiders and Logistics Support.

Thank you to the Salisbury 10 Mile Road Race for having us again, it was a lovely event, albeit a little changeable with the weather! 🌦️ Unfortunately no photo of the whole team this year but we do have some snaps of our unusual visitor, thankfully requiring no first aid assistance! 🐈

Kat and Tim had a great time today going through '3 Ways to Save a Life' with Warminster Mini-Police, at New Close Primary School. Lots of lovely participation.

And we were visited by a tiny duckling! (perfect antidote to 'Severe Bleeding').

All part of our free Community Engagement programme. We've increased awareness and first aid confidence at schools, parish halls, community centres, WIs, clubs, charities, retirement homes, in libraries and town centres across South Wiltshire.

Message us if you'd like to know more or book a session.
