🌿 Half Term Reflections 🌿

This week, with a little extra space in my schedule (thank you, half term!), I've been able to do something that brings me a lot of joy — running each day with my lovely friends. 🏃‍♀️💬

It got me thinking about the work I do as an osteopath and the people I treat who are in pain.

When I see a patient, I’m often thinking about two key things: function and pain.
Can this person do the things they love? Can they move freely, comfortably, and confidently?

Pain often gets in the way of that — it stops people from joining in, from living fully.
But what I really love about my work is this: when the pain eases, it’s not the absence of pain that people talk about first... it’s the things they can do again. 🙌

"I can go for a walk with my kids."
"I can sleep through the night."
"I went back to my dance class."

And that’s the part I truly love being part of. 💛
Helping people move again, live again, be themselves again.

I hope you are having a great week!

Still Struggling with Hip Pain?

If your hip discomfort persists despite stretching and rest. Often, hip pain is a sign of deeper imbalances or irritations in the body.

As an osteopath, I frequently encounter patients whose hip issues stem from:

Imbalances in muscles

Compensation for back issues

Compensations from old injuries

Addressing only the symptoms won't provide lasting relief. A holistic approach that targets the root cause is essential.

Menopause Wellness Tips 💪💧🥗😴

✨ Move More – Regular exercise supports your heart, muscles, and bones. It also reduces inflammation and boosts your mood!

💧 Hydrate More – With lower oestrogen, we hold less fluid, leading to dry joints. Drink more water throughout the day to stay supple and energized.

🍷 Drink Less Alcohol – Cut back for your liver, sleep, and hydration. A few dry days a week makes a big difference!

🥗 Eat Well – A balanced diet helps manage weight, especially as testosterone drops (less muscle) and oestrogen shifts (belly fat gain). Aim for a healthy BMI (18.5–24.9) as a general guide—not a rule!

😴 Prioritise Sleep – Ditch the screens before bed and focus on quality rest. Sleep is your secret weapon!

I take the time to listen — not just to your symptoms, but to your story.

Whether it's pain that crept in slowly or something that came on suddenly, I want to understand what you're experiencing and how it's affecting your life.

From there, I carry out a thoughtful, hands-on assessment. This helps me identify what’s going on beneath the surface and how your body is responding.

Together, we’ll build a plan that supports both healing and confidence — step by step.

You don’t have to push through pain alone. Let’s find your way forward, together.

Although I love a good weights session I realise many people aren't inclined to do that for many reasons. May be associations with weights or gyms are a factor, or time or maybe it just isn't the right moment as you have lots of life events happening
and finding time for regular exercise is a bit of a joke. If this is you then you may be reassured to know that having regular movement breaks through the day can
be of benefit to your musculoskeletal symptoms of menopause.

Setting a timer or using events like making a cup of tea or popping to the toilet as a chance to get some movement into your day will help reduce aches that develop from sitting for long periods.

Daily movement strategies can help with circulation of blood and lymph and keep joints feeling less stiff and muscles feeling more mobile.

ACTION-
Take 60-90 seconds every hour or 4-5 times a day to go through a range of spinal movements - stand, reach down then side of your leg, repeat the other side, turn
to look behind you, shrug your shoulders, pull them forward and back. Repeat for up to 90 seconds.
Or while the kettle is boiling - use the work top for support do some mini squats or march on the spot or heel raises.

When we ride the hormonal rollercoaster which is menopause the inflammation in our bodies varies widely. This can result it tendon pain in the shoulder or hips or ankles, generally feeling stiffer. How can we offset this? We can move more often, fidgeting, not being still, having a break from one position or sitting or standing. Joining in some form of regular exercises will help lift mood but also help offset inflammation. Joints benefit greatly from being used. Lifting weights regularly (twice a week 15-20mins) is of great short term, medium and long term benefit. Also, consider talking to your GP about whether HRT is something you would like to consider.

There's two main reasons why prolonged shoulder pain might make you gain weight. Sleep is the first, if you are having disturbed night's sleep due to the shoulder pain and this happens most nights then it will effect the hormones that regulate hunger. This will trigger you to eat more than you ordinarily would. Also, if you are sleeping poorly and having daily activities affected by pain and you aren't doing what you enjoy this will raise cortisol levels, which is our stress hormone. This will also have an effect on appetite and insulin levels and food choices.
Then you have the more general issue with if your shoulder hurts you are going to be less inclined to do physical activity.
Book your appointment if this is an issue for you.
