The Circuit is the UK's national defibrillator database and is used by the Ambulance Service to direct callers to their nearest defibrillator - but of course they need to know a defibrillator is there to be able to direct people to it!

Registration is easy and if the defibrillator is only available at certain times / on certain days this can be entered into the system. The Circuit will send regular requests to the registered email address to check that the unit is 'rescue ready' and the pads are in date, but the biggest benefit is in knowing that your device can help to save more lives in your community.

You can find your nearest available defibrillator by going to www.defibfinder.uk, which is the user side of The Circuit.

If you'd like any help or assistance in setting your defib up on The Circuit, do get in touch and we'll be happy to help you.

๐Ÿš‘This one is just outside the city centre, on a main trunk road into Salisbury.

๐Ÿš‘Pop your guess below and I'll check back in with the answer on Saturday evening - and hopefully you'll learn the whereabouts of some that are new to you over the next few weeks as I put more photos up.

Everyone feels stressed at times - but when does it begin to become a real problem?

These are some of the signs that you need to take action:
โŒConstantly tired, even after sleep
โŒStruggling to concentrate or to make decisions
โŒFeeling irritable, anxious or overwhelmed more frequently
โŒPhysical symptoms such as headaches or upset tummies
โŒLack of interest or motivation for things you used to enjoy

Work-related stress is the #๐Ÿญ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—บ ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ in the UK - but many of us push through until we can push no more and things begin to crumble.

Spotting the signs early is key for yourself and your team. Small changes like ๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€, ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ด๐˜‚๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฟ ๐—ฏ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ด๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฑ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—บ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป are key and can make a big difference.

๐Ÿ‘How do you manage stress at work? Pop your thoughts below - I'm interested to hear your tried and tested methods and it might spark an idea for others, too.

โš–๏ธDid you know... there is a law that protects you as a first aider?

A few years ago I was approached by a local business about first aid training. They often had customers on their premises for a reasonably long period of time, and they had a cafe on site, too ๐Ÿง๐Ÿซ–. Their clientele's average age was close to retirement๐Ÿ‘ต, and their facility was mostly outdoors ๐ŸŒฒ- so there were signficant risks which could result in the need for first aid treatment.

When I went back to them to prompt for a date for their training, they said they had changed their mind and weren't going to get any staff trained at all - because if they weren't trained and didn't act to help someone, they couldn't get in trouble. They'd rather be ignorant and untrained than confident and competent - even after I had explained the SARAH Act to them. ๐Ÿ˜ข

The SARAH Act 2015 (Social Action, Responsibility and Heroism Act) was passed to make sure that people are able to help others with first aid in their moment of need, without fearing what might happen to them if they get it wrong. ๐Ÿ˜Š

The Act basically means first aiders are protected and cannot be sued for the first aid treatment they provide, whether that is to a member of the public, a friend or family member, a work colleague or a child in their care, as long as:

1) their actions are meant with all good intentions and are not malicious
2) the first aider does not attempt something for which training is required (think open heart surgery, amputations or the hole in the neck with the biro!), and
3) where possible, consent has been gained from the casualty (or their parent if they are a minor) - NB if they are unconscious then consent is implied

โ›‘๏ธDoes this only apply to trained first aiders?
No - it applies to anyone being a 'Good Samaritan', whether formally trained or not.

If you can't be sued, it makes absolute sense to do some basic first aid training to feel confident and competent to help someone - you might just save their life.

I sincerely hope no-one has had the misfortune to need first aid assistance from that local business... I've learned to explain the SARAH Act better since then! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Did you know that...

๐ŸŒŽ245,000 are affected each year in the UK

๐ŸŒŽAround 48,000 deaths are caused by sepsis in the UK every year

๐ŸŒŽThat's a death every 10 minutes

๐ŸŒŽCaused by an infection that the body can't fight off, which then develops into sepsis which attacks the body's systems

๐ŸŒŽMore likely to affect those with weaker immune systems, including the young, the elderly and those with other medical conditions - but it can affect ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜บ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ

๐ŸŒŽIf you're not sure if it could be sepsis, just ask 'could it be sepsis?' - clinicians have a set checklist (called NEWS (National Early Warning Score) which gives a numeric value to symptoms and clearly indicates when sepsis should be considered, so don't be afraid to ask

We all have a limited capacity for stress - some of us have naturally more capacity than others!

Your capacity can fluctuate over time, but eventually a full bucket is going to overflow unless you can implement ways to empty it at the same time as it's filling up...

The life factors which fill up our buckets include:
โšชworkload pressures
โšชfinancial worries
โšชrelationships and family
โšชphysical and mental health worries
โšชbereavement
โšชdiscrimination

Some factors are beyond our control, but what we can control is putting in place strategies to empty the container - our coping strategies - and making sure they are positive ones.

Different people prefer different strategies at different times, so having a stock of things to turn to that work for you can be really helpful. Some are long term strategies, some can be deployed as and when. Here are some for starters...

โšชExercise (which types?)
โšชFresh air and/or being in nature
โšชTalking to friends or family, or even a professional
โšชEnforcing breaks and time off
โšชGood nutrition
โšชMindfulness

Which strategies are in ๐˜บ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ toolbox?? Pop your thoughts in the comments ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿš‘As a Community First Responder with the Ambulance Service, we are privileged to help members of our local community when they need support the most, sometimes arriving before the Ambulance crews to begin assessments and treatment and often staying to lend a hand once crews arrive. In the last few weeks I've been to an elderly lady suffering from chest pain with a history of heart issues, a gentleman having multiple seizures, a cardiac arrest and a gentleman having a stroke. In every case, the casualties and the people who are with them are very grateful to see someone turn up to help them.

๐Ÿš‘In mid-August I spent a 12hr shift with a great ambulance crew as a 'third man' - often known to us a ride-along. These 6 monthly shifts give us a real insight into the work of the ambulance service and allow us to observe the best service in the worst situations. This particular shift took us to an elderly lady who had fallen and possibly dislocated her shoulder, a lady experiencing a heart attack, a young man who had taken an overdose and a lady vomiting blood - all casualties who really needed their help, and in some cases whose lives were saved by their actions.

๐Ÿš‘We receive regular training, and support from the ambulance crews who attend the jobs we have been despatched to. We are treated as members of a team, and the casualties are the ones who benefit. The nation owes a debt of gratitude to these knights (and dames!) in green - not just when a crisis like Covid comes along, but every hour of every day. I'm a proud member of Team Green!

Last week behind the scenes at Winterbury Training... What do we get up to?

โšชA one day first aid course for Broad Chalke Primary School ๐Ÿฉน
โšชA morning session on mental health awareness with St Mark's Preschool, upskilling their team to help each other, look after their own wellbeing and support the parents of their young charges ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ
โšชTwo Epi-pen refresher courses - Winterslow Primary & Alderbury and West Grimstead Primary Schools ๐Ÿ’‰
โšชA morning with Year 6 at St Andrew's Primary in Laverstock learning first aid skills and how the cardio-vascular system works ๐Ÿฉธ
โšชA meeting with our great accountants at Caboodle Business Support to check our accounts before filing, and a bit of financial planning ๐Ÿ’ฐ
โšช'Helping' the youngest son to pack for going back to university - and trying to ignore the mess in the lounge that was part of the process!
โšชTwo webinars to improve visibility through websites and social media ๐Ÿ’ป
โšชTrying - but failing - to give a pint of blood... They declined my red stuff due to waiting for gallbladder removal ๐Ÿ˜ข
โšชA night at the theatre watching Mary Poppins (which was brilliant!) ๐ŸŽญ plus a haircut ๐Ÿ’‡โ€โ™€๏ธand having my nails done ๐Ÿ’… just to balance the week out a bit!
โšชAll rounded off with baking a couple of apple cakes to make use of the garden crops, and day down at the allotment, clearing out plants which have finished their (meagre) cropping, and pulling carrots and beans for Ben to take to university with him (he eats them raw as snacks - I'm sure he's not my child!)๐Ÿฅ•๐Ÿซ˜

๐Ÿ“šApparently it's 'Read a Book Day' - there seems to be one almost every week (although I'm not complaining, I love reading!)

๐Ÿ“šMy favourite book is The Firm by John Grisham, but I love most legal or psychological thrillers, or crime novels. I really love getting lost in a book - one a day on holiday is the usual level!

๐Ÿ“šI've slowly become a fan of my Kindle but for many years only a physical printed copy would do. There's still something special to me about a bound book, but the Kindle is so much more practical than taking up half of my holiday luggage allowance with books!

๐Ÿ“šWhat about you? Physical copy or Kindle (or similar)?
๐Ÿ“šAnd what's your favourite book to recommend to others?

Tomorrow is 'Buy a Book Day; - perhaps that one should have come before 'Read a Book Day'??! ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ
