It's National Bubble Wrap day - but how on earth does that relate to anything that Winterbury Training does?

On Saturday I spent the day with 14 brilliant childcarers, mostly childminders, working with them to improve their knowledge of Young People's Mental Health (with a 100% pass rate on the qualification - well done all!).

One of the many themes of the training is looking at how 'helicopter parenting' (hovering to help your child through life's adversities) or 'lawnmower parenting' (clearing the way to give them a smooth path through life) is really not helpful.

Removing obstacles from children's lives might seem laudable, but it removes the opportunities for children to build resilience - the ability to bounce back from adversity. If they don't face adversity, how do they learn to bounce back from it?

We watched an excerpt from Dick Moore's TedX talk - Dancing or Drowning in the Rain? It's powerful, and looks at how the failure to build resilience in our children can have catastrophic consequences. It'sthought-provoking, and well worth the 18 minutes to watch it (TW - su***de - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wstksuaSMD4). Giving our children the ability to weather the storms of life is one of our most important roles as parents and this talk really brings that home.

So, don't bubble wrap children! They need to learn to manage risks themselves, to build their resilience and to weather their own storms - and to know that you're there to support them if needed, but not to 'helicopter' or 'lawnmower' their route...

Just a reminder on National Pharmacists Day...

For seven common conditions your pharmacist can now provide some prescription medicine, if needed, without you needing to see a GP.

Think pharmacy first.

Find out more at nhs.uk/thinkpharmacyfirst - your pharmacist is a medical professional who can help with many more conditions than we tend to think!!

๐ŸŒฟ Today is Houseplant Appreciation Day. ๐ŸŒฟ

Outdoors, I'm pretty good with plants, but indoors I don't have such green fingers... But, I have managed to nurture some houseplants and whilst I don't talk to them and encourage them to thrive with kind words, I do definitely appreciate them!

Not just for their fresh, green welcome in the room though. They have loads of benefits, including:

๐ŸชดBetter air quality - removing indoor air pollutants and increasing humidity
๐ŸชดReducing stress, improving wellbeing and promoting calm
๐ŸชดBoosting concentration, improving memory and increasing productivity
๐ŸชดMaking indoor spaces feel softer and more welcoming
๐ŸชดGiving you a sense of achievement when you remember to water it (or when it decides to thrive even without much attention!)

The image below is our lounge (sadly now minus the Christmas decor around the hearth โ˜น๏ธ) with our hardy houseplants.

Do you have houseplants and appreciate them??

The Resuscitation Council UK released their new guidelines at the end of October - and there are a few significant differences to the protocols we teach on first aid courses.

As a service to the business community, I am delighted to announce that Winterbury Training is running a FREE update webinar in early January. We welcome anyone to attend, whether you completed your last training course with us or an alternative provider. The same session is repeated so you need only book one of the three date /time options. With first aid qualifications lasting for 3 years, many people will find their renewal is several months or even years away, making this webinar a must-attend for all workplace first aiders to remain up to date and confident to act in an emergency.

(you may need to copy and paste the link - social media isn't keen on allowing people to navigate away from pages!!)

The HSE L74 Regulations requires workplace first aiders to keep their skills up to date, and this is an easy, quick way to meet that requirement. The content is the same on each webinar session, so sign up for the one which best suits your diary, share the opportunity with other first aiders in your workplace (or outside it!) and settle down with a cuppa in the comfort of your own workplace or home. We'll send you a PDF of the changes after the webinar so you can refer back to them when needed.

Please feel free to share this opportunity with your networks - the more people we can update, the better! If you have any queries please do get in touch - you're welcome to message, email (info@winterburytraining.co.uk) or phone us (01722 449299).

Please note, the protocols covered are those for adult workplace first aid; we will run further sessions specifically covering paediatric protocols for schools, nurseries and childcarers in ear

๐ŸŽ†2025 has been a fabulous year for Winterbury Training - thank you for the part you played in it!

In addition to the headlines, we:
๐Ÿ‘Sponsored a school choir to participate in Young Voices at the O2 Arena
๐Ÿ‘Supported two cohorts of new Community First Responders in initial training
๐Ÿ‘Provided voluntary event medic support for three local trail runs
๐Ÿ‘Worked with a team of budding young thespians and creative artists at Salisbury Playhouse to produce first aid scenarios - watch this space for the results (including CPR in interpretative dance!)
๐Ÿ‘Achieved 'Highly Commended' (runner up!) in the Salisbury Business Awards (Small Business of the Year)
๐Ÿ‘Worked with Spencer Mulholland and Salisbury Rotary Club to fund three new public access life-threatening bleed kits - units will be placed outside Salisbury Playhouse / City Hall, and outside The Chapel nightclub, plus a third location yet to be announced (watch this space - we'll let you know when they're in place)
๐Ÿ‘Trained approximately 80 people on our free community sessions (we didn't take a register!)

So many individuals and businesses have helped us to achieve these figures this year, including great Winterbury trainers, networking contacts, business clients, cheerleaders and supporters - too many to name (and I'd be fearful of missing someone out!) so please take this post as a THANK YOU for helping us to help others save lives.

๐Ÿ’ฅYou are awesome!๐Ÿ’ฅ

When do you take your decorations down??

12th night is 5th January, but mine never last quite that long. They need to be down and packed away by the time the schools go back - but I know some people who take theirs down on Boxing Day and can't wait to 'get their house back'.

This year I hung up a tree decoration which never made it back into the loft last Christmas - it remained in a candle holder on the mantlepiece all year... There always seems to be something left in plain view until around March when someone notices it!

So here are the last photos of our Christmas lights - before everything goes away this weekend and it feels stripped bare (sob).

I'd love to know which of these rings true for you. Click the emoji that most resonates...
๐Ÿ‘I'd leave my tree up all year if I could - I love decorations!
โค๏ธI take them all down on 12th night and not a moment before
๐Ÿ˜‚ Decorations are down on Boxing Day
๐Ÿ˜ฎSomewhere between 1st Jan and 12th night, depending how I feel
๐Ÿ˜กIf I could get away with no decorations, there woudn't be a bauble in sight!

If you are putting your decorations away over the next few days, take care with lifting, shifting, climbing up and down ladders and remember that you'll be grateful next year if you carefully wind up those lights when you take them down!! ๐Ÿชœ

Humans Vs Sprouts!!๐Ÿฅ—

Every Christmas, sprouts take out more people than you'd think..
๐ŸฅœSo do grapes, nuts, turkey, Maltesers, toffees, cocktail sausages, cherry tomatoes - they are, of course, some of the causes of choking.๐Ÿ…

๐ŸฝTo try to avoid it, cut up food into small pieces, and encourage children to eat slowly. Take care when chatting & laughing at the same time as eating - choking is often caused by 'breathing in' food.

If someone should choke and be unable to cough effectively:
๐ŸŒ€Phone 999๐ŸŽ…๐Ÿป
๐ŸŒ€Lean the casualty forward
๐ŸŒ€Hit them sharply on the back, between the shoulder blades, up to 5 times
If this doesn't dislodge the item...
๐ŸŒ€Administer up to 5 abdominal thrusts
If it still hasn't dislodged, repeat the back blows, then abdominal thrusts, then back blows etc, until either the item dislodges or the casualty becomes unconscious (in which case begin CPR)

๐Ÿ“ฝCheck out the short video - less than a minute but demonstrates exactly how to do this sequence - it might just save a life!

๐ŸŽ…๐ŸปHave a great Christmas!๐ŸŽ„
