It’s the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Week. Life can be difficult; mental or physical health, finances, work, family, environment, education, strikes, politics, world events, poverty…and the list goes on. I stepped away into the woods yesterday where none of those problems existed for a few moments. Can you find a few seconds to look after yourself this week?

It’s World Mental Health day today. There are lots of things going on in the world, in the UK, in politics and our local communities that can add to our daily load and make it feel like a burden. Support is out there but not always easy to find instantly. I find stepping out into nature really helpful and trying to focus on the colours, sounds and smells. This could be with a local river as I did this weekend in the picture, or with a small plant, flower or tree.

The picture is taken from a bridge over the river looking downstream. Trees and plants are on both banks and overflowing into the water. The river is shallow and you can see the stones on the riverbed as it curves. There are three swans floating in the distance and the bright blue of the late autumn afternoon is reflected in the colour of the water. There are fields to the right which have been harvested but not yet ploughed for the new crops.

It’s been a while since I posted to this page...the last few years of covid time seem to both have a significance of their own and also not really registered as time that has passed for me. I have been busy supporting family, friends, clients and doing a BA (Hons) year. Yesterday I also had confirmation that I have achieved my BACP accreditation which I am really delighted about.

I’m also really happy to have become part of Sarum Counselling, a cooperative charity that has the capacity to offer subsidised counselling to those in Salisbury who need counselling but cannot afford it (subject to criteria but not a lengthy application process).

I will have a few spaces from mid-June so please do pass on my details to family and friends that may need them. I am working online and on the phone and offer a free 30 minute chat to any potential client.

I’m taking time off over the jubilee weekend and hope that you all have some time to rest too.

The picture shows Naomi grinning standing in front of a field full of yellow crops on the edge of some woodland.

Today is World Mental Health day so there will be lots in the media about how people struggle with their mental health.

The struggle is a daily one for many, especially at the moment with the long term effects of Covid and Brexit, impacting everyone in a way that is out of our control.

If you or your family & friends are having a bad day, week, month, year or more then that is really tough. For those who can afford it, private counselling can be so helpful. One day I’d love to set a charity for those that can’t afford to access counselling. In the meantime I’ll continue to offer a free 30 minute chat to all potential clients so that there is a cost free way of finding out if I would be the right counsellor for them.

I have a few spaces at the moment so please do share this if you think that would be helpful to someone you know. I can be contacted by email on naomi@acceptcounselling.com or by text/phone on 07493 142149.

The photo below shows a stormy view from Boscombe pier with dark rain clouds and a c***k of blue sky. In the sea in the distance there are several kite surfers, trying to control their movements against the force of the wind and the waves. The beach is empty.

It’s the final day of mental health awareness week and the focus has been on nature. As well as being busy in the office I have made time for a walk amongst the bluebells, as I love their smell and how they look carpeted across a woodland floor.

One of the most simple and beneficial things we can do to improve wellbeing is to focus on how we are breathing.

Shallow breath tells our brain that there is a danger, keeping our bodies in fight or flight. There has been a lot to keep us holding our breath this year. Taking a few long deep breathes can update our brains that there is no danger and helps to reset the fight or flight response.

Try it now if you like, at home or amongst bluebells. Put your hand on your chest and notice how you are breathing. Close your mouth, relax your shoulders and take 3 deep breathes (as deep as is comfortable for you) in and out of your nose.

When you have finished see if you notice a difference in how you feel. If you like the effect, repeat regularly, I like using the kettle boiling as a good time to remind me to do this.

What an exhausting week. The impact of constant external change can have a massive impact, both consciously and unconsciously. I went for a walk this morning and paused for what is usually a lovely view. But today there was fog in every direction, it felt like a reflection of the last few weeks and months. Should I carry on upwards through the fog, or retreat. What I did was sat and rested for a while, I listened to the bird song, I heard the rustle of the leaves and the distant sound of traffic. Then I realised my breath was shallow so I breathed deeper, my back was hunched and my shoulders were raised so I stretched and relaxed those. Then I realised that I was ok to make a decision on my direction. Which was to retreat to try a different, hopefully less foggy path.

Thank you so much for your likes and shares of my post. I really enjoyed my first day at Enterprise House yesterday, especially my lunchtime walk down the river where I encountered this unexpected sight. That seemed like a great way to spend the afternoon but instead I returned to the office. I can recommend Toogood’s Property Group if you are looking to rent property in Salisbury.

During the last few months I have been working from home as I’ve been shielding family members. During that time the building my office was in got sold and I was no longer able to rent my room. With effect from tomorrow I am happy to be working from my new offices at Enterprise House, Boathouse Meadow Business Park, Cherry Orchard Lane, SP2 7LD.

For the current time, during the uncertainty and release of lockdown and anticipating a second wave I am continuing to offer telephone and online counselling only to existing and new clients.

I have a couple of spaces at the moment so please do share my post and encourage your network to seek support if they need it. I can be contacted via email (naomi@acceptcounselling.com), phone/text (07493 142149) or have a look at my website www.acceptcounselling.com.

It’s Mental Health Awareness week and the focus is kindness. In my experience, many people have incredible kindness and compassion towards friends and family but then view themselves and their own actions with criticism. If this sounds like you I would like to use this post to encourage you to ask yourself this question. Would I talk to a family member or friend in the way that I am talking to myself now? If you, or your friends or family, need some counselling support then please encourage yourself or them to be kind and compassionate and to ask for help.
