How can we apply the different planes of asana practice (physical, physiological, organic, pranic, sensory) to our individual yoga practice?
To apply the different planes of asana practice to your individual yoga practice:
1. Physical plane: Focus on proper alignment and technique of the asanas. Ensure you can execute the poses correctly without strain.
2. Physiological plane: Once you have the physical foundation, shift your attention to how the pose affects your internal body systems - bones, muscles, organs. Observe the subtle changes happening within.
3. Organic plane: Move beyond just the physical form and become receptive to the internal effects. Tune into the movements and sensations in your abdomen, pelvis, and other organs.
4. Pranic plane: Shift your awareness to the flow of energy (prana) in your body as you move through the poses. Notice where the energy is flowing freely and where it may be blocked.
5. Sensory plane: Cultivate keen internal awareness of all your senses - sight, sound, touch, etc. Use this sensitivity to make fine adjustments and find the optimal expression of each asana.
The key is to progress gradually, starting with the physical basics and then gradually expanding your focus inward. Be patient and attentive to the subtle changes happening on all these levels. Applying this multi-dimensional approach will deepen your asana practice over time.
Yoga isn’t just about the shape you make — it’s the awareness you build.
