🛝 Another school holiday Tuesday, another park 🛝

Are you starting to wish the kids were back at school? Well you’re not the only one! 😂

It’s now passed the halfway point of the summer and many people, both children and parents, are starting to long for September.

A lack of routine and trying to juggle work commitments alongside childcare starts to take its toll by mid August. The wholesome activities that seemed fun back in July are now failing to keep the kids entertained and lack of financial resources can hugely limit alternative options.

We all know the importance of getting out of the house, meeting people, getting creative and being outdoors but it’s so easy to fall back on screens and this may have started to have an impact on your own and your children’s mental health.

But good news, there’s not long to go now and there are lots of free fun activities for families still going on in and around Bradford. For example have a look at:

’s Our Patch projects such as
’s Play in the Park events
and
for 100s of free family events in the district.

Have you taken advanatage yet of some of the fabulous positive experiences that Bradford 2025 is bringing to the district?

And how have such things impacted your mental health?

There seems to be more opportunities than ever to do something positive near your home that might be good for your wellbeing. These are usually free and we’ve heard from so many people how they’ve been taking part. Whether it’s

Listening and dancing to live music at one of the city’s many live music venues
Crafting at one of the many community workshops run the the Our Patch projects
Exploring the Wild Uplands project on Pen*stone Hill
Getting messy in the interactive Island of Foam
Being artistic at The Mega Drawing Box
Singing with the Bantam of the Opera
Laughing at a comedy event at The Beacon
Being inspired by the new exhibitions at Salts Mill
And lots more.

Whatever your passions or interests, there’s something for everyone.

Visit or to hear about some of the amazing projects and events happening in your local area that might be good for your mental health.

Are you considering going to counselling but not sure which therapist to choose?

Here is some guidance on choosing a therapist

Firstly, choose someone that is qualified and recognised by an appropriate body such as the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS) or the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).

Secondly, look at their credentials. Do their experiences, skills and specialities meet your specific needs?

Next, the most important thing is the relationship that you establish with your therapist so it is critical that you feel comfortable with them and trust them. They could be super qualified, highly experienced and recommended by 100s but if you don’t click, then they’re not the right therapist for you.

Finally, don’t be afraid to say this isn’t working. An initial phone call is the most commonly used process for getting to know a potential therapist but it’s often the case that you need to speak to a few before you find the right person. Don’t worry if you don’t think they are right. And also don’t be offended if they say they’re not the right therapist for you. Both sides need to feel happy to proceed.

All the therapists working from the Victoria Therapy Centre are self-employed and manage their own clients. However if you are struggling to choose a therapist, please email us and we can provide some guidance based on your specific needs.

👁️ What is EMDR therapy? 👁️

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing and is a psychological therapy used to help those experiencing symptoms due to trauma or PTSD. The NHS recommends EMDR therapy as a treatment for PTSD as it is evidence based.

The NHS website explains how EMDR works:

“It involves recalling the traumatic incident in detail while making eye movements, usually by following the movement of your therapist’s finger.”

Alternatively EMDR therapists may use other methods to induce eye movement or “bilateral stimulation” such as finger tapping, playing sounds, a light bar or, as pictured, handheld buzzers named “theratappers”.

It can sound a strange method but it has high success rates and is definitely worth considering for anyone suffering negatively because of past trauma.

For more information on EMDR including videos, please visit our website or contact therapists Lisa, Sam or Amandeep directly, whom are all qualified and experienced in EMDR.

📍 Where is the Victoria Therapy Centre?📍

Our beautiful listed building is in the heart of Saltaire Village in Bradford on the corner of Victoria Road and Saltaire Road. It is 2 minutes walk from the train station and the Leeds-Liverpool Canal.

Saltaire is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was built by Victorian entrepreneur Sir Titus Salt on the River Aire. He built a huge textile mill, 100s of terraced cottages, a hospital, school and many other community buildings to offer the original mill workers a healthy place to live and work.

Today it is a popular tourist destination as Salts Mill is home to an art gallery, diner, high quality retailers and numerous other business as well as being a popular filming location. And Saltaire village is now home to a fantastic range of shops and eateries.

We are proud to continue Sir Titus, legacy with a focus on health and wellbeing in this beautiful setting.

Are you passionate about the outdoors?
Do you recognise the benefit that nature has on your mental health?

Then you may appreciate eco-therapy, an alternative approach to counselling.

Eco or ecological therapy recognises the importance of our relationship with the natural world and with others for our own wellbeing. It creates space for a holistic approach to therapy allowing for opportunities to explore mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of who we are. At Victoria Therapy Centre this therapy is provided by Jenny.

To find out more about therapy with an ecological approach, contact Jenny by emailing jenny@victoriatherapycentre.co.uk

☀️☀️ Summer is upon us ☀️☀️

And that means generally a better time for our mental health. More sunshine, fresh air and exercise is hugely beneficial to our wellbeing and when the weather is like this it warms us both physically and emotionally.

But even when the sun is shining, it’s important to keep up these positive activities whenever and wherever you can.

In the meantime, don’t miss and opportunity for a glorious morning stroll.
