We're showcasing exciting projects from some of the teams at Bradford District Care Trust. LesleyAnne led the Health Visiting team's work to gain UNICEF’s most prestigious 'Gold' award, which marks continuing excellence in supporting local families with feeding and developing close, loving relationships with their babies. She is hugely proud of the achievement and the effort that went into it from both the Health Visiting and Community Infant Feeding teams.

“Achieving gold takes a lot of work to ensure high standards can and are maintained – they have to become ‘the way we do things’, the way we work. Our service has achieved that, which means families across Bradford can be confident of excellent feeding advice and support with a wide range of feeding issues, including complex problems which need to be referred for specialist help.”

LesleyAnne points to inclusivity being a cornerstone of the work and her approach. "I'm a proud Bradfordian and came from a blended family with foster children so I've always been inclusive of difference, and that's important in our work to deliver a really effective service. We have diverse cultures in Bradford and one size doesn't fit all. We want mothers to feel supported around their feeding choices and we adapt to meet their needs."

We're sharing the inspiring stories of some of our staff. Today Infant Feeding Specialist Practitioner and Baby Friendly Lead LesleyAnne talks about her career and her passion for children's nursing. Find out more about our Community Children's services https://tinyurl.com/4mtx67er and check out our latest vacancies https://tinyurl.com/mpzbsshn

In 16 years with Bradford District Care Trust LesleyAnne has been supported to train as a health visitor and then a Baby Friendly UNICEF leader but she's not stopping there as her next ambition is to become a lactation consultant. She said: "I've experienced such strong leadership all the way through. People in the Trust have supported my passions and I simply couldn't have got where I've got to today if I'd gone from one trust to another."

LesleyAnne's career started with a health and social care GCSE and observational placements at Airedale hospital. She became passionate about children's nursing and trained at Bradford University to become a paediatric nurse, qualifying in 2003. After two and a half years in Bradford's neonatal unit she joined the Care Trust's Community Children's Services Health Visiting team as a staff nurse.

After having her first child, she returned to work and started specialist public health nursing training, qualifying as a health visitor in 2014. The Health Visiting team had meantime begun working towards UNICEF Baby Friendly accreditation and LesleyAnne became a breastfeeding champion within her team. Having been unsuccessful applying to be clinical lead for infant feeding in 2021, the Trust supported LesleyAnne to gain the experience needed for that role by seconding her to the Community Infant Feeding Team. Not only did she gain experience, she has led the work to gain Baby Friendly Gold accreditation - achieved in January 2025.

LesleyAnne says: "Educationally I wasn't a star student, I didn't feel academically confident but I got through and achieved a first in my health visitor qualification. I'd say to anyone starting out to make yourself available for every opportunity and try again if you don't succeed - look at your feedback and think how you can upskill."
