Flu isn’t just a sniffle – it can lead to serious illness, especially in young children. Kids are known as "super spreaders" – they catch and pass on flu easily, often bringing it home to grandparents or younger siblings.

🛡️ The good news? The NHS flu vaccine is free, quick and needle-free (just a nasal spray!)
✅ For 2 & 3 year olds – book with their GP surgery
✅ For school-aged children – return the school consent form ASAP

🧒 Protect your child. 👵 Protect your family. 💙 Protect Cornwall.

A Big Thank You to Cornwall People First! 👏👏
We were delighted to welcome Fliss, the Operational Lead for Cornwall People First, to the practice recently. It was a pleasure to meet Robert and Daniel, who joined Fliss during the visit and kindly shared their thoughts on how we can make our waiting room more autism-friendly.
Their feedback was incredibly helpful and will play an important role in shaping our upcoming waiting room upgrade later this year. We’re committed to making our space more inclusive and welcoming for everyone.
Thank you again to Fliss, Robert, Daniel and the team at Cornwall People First — we really appreciate your time, support, and valuable insights.

Appointment only system to be introduced for blood tests at the Phlebotomy Community Hub at Windsor House

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust and NHS Devon are introducing a major improvement to the way patients have their blood tests at Windsor House and Main Outpatients.
From 6 October 2025, they are introducing a new online booking system through SwiftQueue to make your experience quicker and easier. Patients that have been referred to have their blood tests will need to book their appointment online before attending Windsor House.
Instead of waiting in long queues, patients will be able to book, change, or cancel their appointments online at a time that works best for them. Patients will also get reminders and updates, so they know exactly when and where to go, helping you feel more prepared and reducing the chance of missed appointments.
By managing appointments in advance, they can keep the service running smoothly and reduce overcrowding, making visits more comfortable for everyone.
This change is a direct response to patient feedback and operational challenges, ensuring that people have a more comfortable and timely experience when attending for their blood tests.
The Derriford Outpatients Department will follow the same system shortly after Windsor House. Patients with routine blood tests will be able to choose which location suits them best. Some specialist tests must be done at Outpatients so the samples reach the lab in a timely manner.

University Hospitals Plymouth currently operates two drop-in phlebotomy (blood test) clinics available for patients over the age of 16.

A new Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) has today opened its doors to patients at Derriford Hospital. Located in the brand-new, three-storey Dartmoor Building, the UTC will be open daily from 8am to 8pm, for patients of any age.

Urgent Treatment Centres are walk-in facilities and are available to treat injuries and illness which are not life-threatening but still require urgent treatment. The new UTC will provide treatment in addition to the Cumberland Centre in Devonport and Minor Injury Units in Tavistock and Kingsbridge.

Dr Anne Hicks, Consultant in Emergency Medicine, said: “The new Urgent Treatment Centre will give patients a choice of where to visit when they have a minor illness or injury. This increased capacity in the local area will ease the pressure on our Emergency Department, enabling emergency medicine specialists to focus on those patients who are seriously unwell.”

You should visit the UTC if you have an injury which is not life threatening, but still requires urgent treatment such as:
• Limb fractures
• Minor illness
• Sprains and strains
• Minor head injuries
• Minor scalds and burns
• Bites and stings
• Foreign body in eyes
• Infected wounds and cuts

You do not need to pre-book an appointment, just drop-in to the centre during opening times. There are 14 drop-off spaces and 2 disabled parking spaces, each with a 30-minute limit. For longer stays, the multi-storey car park is available. The Dartmoor building is located at the top of the hospital site, opposite the multi-storey, Costa Coffee and Boots chemist.

The Dartmoor Building, which houses the new UTC, will shortly also become home to other key hospital services such as the Fracture Clinic, Main Outpatients and Pre-operative assessment.

Derriford is also due to benefit from a new, state-of-the-art Emergency Care Building estimated to open in 2028. It’s part of the Future Hospital Programme, which aims to transform how care is delivered and improve lives across Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall through investment in the most up-to-date healthcare environment.

John Stephens, Director of Infrastructure Strategy & Site Services said: “The opening of our new Urgent Treatment Centre marks an important milestone in the continued transformation of Urgent and Emergency Care. It forms part of a broader programme of healthcare developments at Derriford and beyond, designed to deliver state-of-the-art facilities for the people of Plymouth and the wider South West.”
