Nail surgery is a routine minor procedure, done under local anaesthetic, to relieve discomfort from ingrown and painful toenails. This is done by removing the section causing the problem and treating the root to prevent it from growing back.

Senior podiatrist and Director - Laura Dicken

Why did you become a podiatrist?

Inspired by my mum who was a practice nurse, I was interested in a career in healthcare. Whilst at college I had to do work experience and got a placement with the NHS podiatry team at Redcar health centre and James cook. The team were so encouraging, and I got see the variety of treatments they were doing, from routine care, high risk clinics, nail surgery and biomechanics. From there I applied to study a podiatry degree at Queen Margaret’s University in Edinburgh.

I thoroughly enjoyed my training and the variety of study and working in clinics to gain hands on experience. I Graduated 23 years ago. Now, as an experienced podiatrist I thrive on giving a solution to the problem, at getting to know my patients over their regular appointments and providing important health promotion.

With diabetes diagnosis rapidly increasing, foot health education is at a premium. I spend a lot of time gently educating patients on the importance of looking after there feet.

What's the best advice you can give?

The best advice I can give to anyone is to start a good basic footcare routine of washing your feet well, rinsing them , drying carefully - paying particular attention to drying between your toes and applying 10% Ureka cream to your feet.

Why choose a urea based cream for your feet? The skin on your feet is termed as ‘thick skin’ as it has an extra layer called the lucidium, which is there for protection. You need a specialist cream to keep this skin hydrated stretchy and healthy. Foot creams have ingredients specific to your foot needs to help prevent fungal skin infections. But you shouldn’t apply the cream between your toes!
