Please remember to check in on elderly relatives regarding looking after their feet. We’ve had a few cases recently where new patients have been unable to get down to their feet for some time and haven’t asked for help.

As podiatrists we are quite used to this - there is no need for embarrassment. We are here to help, with regular footcare we can help to prevent problems.

What are Chilblains?

Chilblains are painful, itchy swellings on the skin that occur after exposure to cold and damp conditions. They usually affect fingers, toes, ears, nose, and heels.

Causes
- Sudden warming of cold skin
- Poor blood circulation
- Cold, damp climate
- Tight shoes or gloves
- Smoking (reduces blood flow)

What to expect in your first initial podiatry treatment:

1. A full medical history is taken (please bring a list of any medication you take).
2. The podiatrist will discuss any foot health concerns with you.
3. The treatment begins with a herbal foot bath or warm mitt welcome touch.
4. Nails are cut and filed and if necessary, gently drilled (including thickened and fungal nails).
5. Hard skin, corns and cracked heels are painlessly removed.
6. Nourishing nail oil and urea based emollient is applied to the feet to complete treatment.
