Health Support for Farmers

To talk to a sympathetic person who understands farming and rural life:

CALL 03000 111 999
Calls will be answered in person from 7am to 11pm every day of the year.

I need help with:
Stress
Depression
Isolation
Long term illness
Accidents
Alcohol or drug dependency
How FCN can help with health issues:
Stress
As the problems mount and the solutions seem to become further out of reach, mental stress will simply add to the difficulties and can make even the simplest business decision seem very hard to make.

Depression
Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness can begin to take over as the stress mounts. This affects both physical and mental health and can affect one’s ability to make decisions.

Isolation
While many urban dwellers look with envy on the peace and tranquillity of the countryside, they lose sight of the fact that farming is a seven-days-of -the-week job and the opportunities for a social life or even a chat with a neighbour can be few and far between. Adding loneliness to your problems does not make them any easier to bear.

Long term illness
Coping with a long term illness is a challenge in itself. It takes a good deal of managing and planning to keep the business functioning as you would like and enable you to feel you still have something to offer.

Accidents
We all know that farming is a dangerous occupation and despite everyone’s best intentions, accidents do happen. The results are devastating not only for the individual concerned but will lead directly to the way the farm business is run and managed.

Alcohol or drug dependency
This is not confined to the young people of the inner cities. This is a real and dangerous problem whoever you are, whatever your age and wherever you live.

Remember:
If you recognise the danger signs of the problems listed (above) or if you have spotted them in someone you know, doing nothing is not an option.

Act now. FCN volunteers will listen and provide support. They can’t provide a cure for all ills but they can point you in the right direction and they can walk with you as you take the steps towards recovery.

There are far too many cases of farmers who feel that they cannot see a future, a way out of their predicament or become overburdened. Please don’t struggle – talk to FCN before you reach that point.

Please call our Helpline 03000 111 999 – we may be able to help.

All calls to the Helpline are treated confidentially and whatever difficulties you face, the first step is to talk to someone.

If you would like further information and support please contact Ashfields on 01270 446560 or email David.crosthwaite@nhs.net

Meningitis B

There are 2 vaccinations available currently -Meningitis ACWY given at 14-15 years old in high school (usually Year 9) and Meningitis B in under 2 year olds, unless children have special conditions such as no spleen they cannot have over the age of 2 years under CURRENT guidance.

If you are concerned your child has not had Meningitis B vaccine and under the age 2 or other routine childhood vaccines such as Human Papiloma Virus (HPV) and Measles Mumps and Rubella (MMR) then you can ring reception to make enquiries.

If your child is OVER 2 years of age under CURRENT guidance we CANNOT vaccinate with Meningitis B vaccine as we have strict guidance to follow. IF there is local risk the UKHSA will give us new guidance based on the risk and instruct us who requires vaccination. We will respond if UKHSA advises us of any updates and act accordingly.

You can check for updates on the UKHSA website as they are updating their blog regularly with up to date information

Help Shape the New Leighton Hospital!

We’d like to invite people who have recently experienced Leighton Hospital to one of our focus groups to discuss the emerging plans for the new hospital, your aspirations and ideas for the future, and how we can design to be more inclusive for everyone.

📍Sessions will be held in the Bistro at Leighton Hospital:

• Thursday 19th March, 6pm - 7:30pm

• Saturday 21st March, 10:30am - 12pm

Each session lasts around 90 minutes and includes tea and biscuits. Reasonable travel expenses (up to £10 with receipt) can be reimbursed.

The conversation will be relaxed and informal, no preparation needed. Darcy, engagement lead from the project design team Ryder Architecture, will guide you through the discussion.

To book a place or ask a question, please email: sdarcy@ryderarchitecture.com and let us know which session you’d like to attend.

If we are unable to give you your chosen date, please rest assured we will offer alternative ways to share your views!

We look forward to hearing your ideas!

We are seeing a rise in measles cases in parts of England.

Vaccination is the most effective way to protect children from serious illness.
We’re encouraging parents to check their children are up to date with their vaccinations. Check your child's red book or speak to their GP practice.

Norovirus is a stomach bug that causes diarrhoea and vomiting.
The average number of patients in hospital with norovirus each day last week rose to over 1,000 for the first time this winter.

It can spread very easily, but washing your hands frequently with soap and water is the best way to stop it spreading.

If you catch it, stay at home until two days after the symptoms stop. Don’t visit hospitals or care homes during this time.
