Keep an eye out for rip currents!
Rips can drag people and debris out to deeper water at a frightening speed, even on a calm sunny day.
If you are caught in a rip current:
✅ Stay calm and avoid swimming directly against the current
✅ Raise your hand and shout for help
✅ If possible, swim parallel to the shore until you’re free from the rip.
The hallmarks of a rip current:
✅ Darker calm stretches of water in an otherwise choppy sea
✅ Foamy, discoloured or sandy water flowing out beyond the waves
✅ Areas of rippled or churning water without breaking waves.
Remember, rips don’t always show all of these signs at once.
