Home Instead - East Herts and Uttlesford

Home Instead - East Herts and Uttlesford We can also provide valuable staff assistance during busy times of the day or when staffing levels require some external support.

We provide Home Care, Live-in Care, Dementia Care, and other help around the home to support the people of East Hertfordshire and Uttlesford surrounding areas to live safely in the comfort of their own homes. Providing a wide range of services across the community

Many of our at-home clients receive Home Instead care as a result of a direct approach to us by their families, but we also have strong links with medical practices, social agencies, and charities, which utilise our comprehensive services or recommend them to their clients. Much of our work involves liaisons with care homes and independent living centers providing individual residents with a higher level of care when extra help is needed. Whilst our principal services involve the day-to-day care of older people in their own homes (and in care homes), we also provide a range of specialist services, which include Alzheimer's and dementia care, convalescence care - and respite care, for families who need a break from day-to-day caring duties. Our services are also applicable to those with learning and physical disabilities - and we are able to provide comprehensive, specialised home care for individuals who face these challenges. Again, we are approached directly by the families of those with special needs, plus we also work with medical and social agencies, charities, and care groups.

🍊🥕🥬 Immune-Friendly Foods for Late Autumn

As the evenings draw in and the temperatures dip, many of us start thinking about keeping well through the colder months. One simple way older adults and their families can support wellbeing is by enjoying seasonal foods that are rich in natural goodness.

Here are some ideas to add colour and comfort to meals this November:

Citrus fruits (like oranges, satsumas, and grapefruits) bring a fresh source of vitamin C, which helps the body stay resilient.

Root vegetables (such as carrots, parsnips, and swede) are perfect for hearty soups and roasts, offering warmth and energy.

Dark leafy greens (like kale, spinach, and cabbage) are packed with nutrients and taste wonderful in stews or gently steamed as a side.

Cooking with the seasons not only makes meals tastier, but it also brings a sense of rhythm and comfort at this time of year. Sharing these dishes with loved ones, whether it’s a Sunday roast or a simple soup, can turn an everyday meal into a moment of connection.

🍲 What’s your favourite meal to share in the colder months?

Post-hospital syndrome: an overlooked stage of recovery

Leaving hospital does not always mean full recovery. Many patients experience a temporary period of increased vulnerability known as post-hospital syndrome.

During this time, the risks of falls, infections, and readmission are higher. This is not only due to the original condition, but also to the effects of the hospital stay itself. Disrupted sleep, reduced nutrition, inactivity, and stress can all affect resilience.

Key points for awareness:

Post-hospital syndrome is an acquired condition, not a continuation of the original illness.

It can affect both older and younger patients, although older adults are often at greater risk.

Families and carers can help by encouraging rest, ensuring safe surroundings, and monitoring medications carefully.

By recognising the impact of post-hospital syndrome, communities and healthcare professionals can better support recovery and reduce avoidable complications.

👻 Happy Halloween from Home Instead 🧡

As the streets fill with trick-or-treaters, it’s worth remembering that Halloween can sometimes feel unsettling for older adults. A friendly chat, an extra visit, or simply spending the evening together can help them feel safe and included.

Let’s share the spirit of Halloween by looking after those who may feel more anxious tonight. 🎃

🌍 World Stroke Day, Know the Signs, Share the Knowledge

A stroke can happen suddenly, but recognising the warning signs and acting quickly can save lives. This World Stroke Day, let’s spread awareness far and wide.

The FAST test is a simple way to remember the signs:

Face – look for drooping

Arms – check for weakness

Speech – notice if it’s slurred

Time – dial 999 straight away

Beyond awareness, today is about compassion. Reach out to someone you know who is living with the effects of stroke, sometimes a chat or a helping hand makes all the difference.
