Home Instead - East Herts and Uttlesford

Home Instead - East Herts and Uttlesford We can also provide valuable staff assistance during busy times of the day or when staffing levels require some external support.

We provide Home Care, Live-in Care, Dementia Care, and other help around the home to support the people of East Hertfordshire and Uttlesford surrounding areas to live safely in the comfort of their own homes. Providing a wide range of services across the community

Many of our at-home clients receive Home Instead care as a result of a direct approach to us by their families, but we also have strong links with medical practices, social agencies, and charities, which utilise our comprehensive services or recommend them to their clients. Much of our work involves liaisons with care homes and independent living centers providing individual residents with a higher level of care when extra help is needed. Whilst our principal services involve the day-to-day care of older people in their own homes (and in care homes), we also provide a range of specialist services, which include Alzheimer's and dementia care, convalescence care - and respite care, for families who need a break from day-to-day caring duties. Our services are also applicable to those with learning and physical disabilities - and we are able to provide comprehensive, specialised home care for individuals who face these challenges. Again, we are approached directly by the families of those with special needs, plus we also work with medical and social agencies, charities, and care groups.

Could a five-minute check make a difference?

From 8–14 September Blood Pressure UK raise awareness for their campaign called; Know Your Numbers! Week

This week encourages everyone to get their blood pressure checked. It’s simple, quick, and can help highlight any issues early.

If you support someone who’s older, has a long-term health condition, or hasn’t had a check in a while, this is a great time to help them book one.

Most people won’t notice their blood pressure creeping up, but a routine check can offer peace of mind and a chance to take action if needed.

💬 Your local pharmacy or GP practice is a good place to start. You can also get a blood pressure machine delivered by ordering one online.

🧠 September is World Alzheimer's Month

Not everyone with dementia forgets their loved ones. Not every story is the same. What many families share, though, is a quiet strength, built on routines, glances, and small moments that still connect.

This month, let’s talk more openly. Let’s learn more carefully. And let’s remind ourselves that behind every diagnosis is a person with a history, a sense of humour, and a need for dignity.

Whether you're supporting someone close to you or simply learning how to be more understanding in your community, your awareness matters.

🏡 Getting Ready for a Hospital Discharge
Coming home after a hospital stay can feel overwhelming. A few small changes can make things safer and more comfortable:

🔸 Clear walkways – Remove rugs, wires or anything that could cause a trip.
🔸 Check seating – Use chairs with armrests and firm cushions.
🔸 Keep essentials close – Place things like medication, water and glasses within easy reach.
🔸 Stay on one floor – Set up a bed and living space downstairs if stairs are a challenge.

A bit of planning can make all the difference for a smoother recovery.

It's about more than safety. It's about comfort, trust and knowing the person you care about is not alone.

And for families, it means being able to rest, knowing someone capable is there.

🏡 Bank Holiday Visits: A Chance to Check In, Not Just Catch Up

For many families, the Bank Holiday means packing the car and heading off to visit parents or grandparents. These visits are often full of chatter and cups of tea, but they can also highlight changes that aren’t always easy to talk about.

Here are a few gentle things to keep an eye on during your visit:

🕰 Is your loved one keeping track of time and daily tasks?
📦 Is there unopened post or packages tucked away?
🍽 Are there signs they’re skipping meals or struggling with cooking?
🚪 Do they seem more anxious or hesitant about leaving the house?

If something feels different, it may be time to start a quiet conversation. Support at home doesn’t have to mean big changes, but it can make a big difference.
