Incredible increase in Bottlenose Dolphin sightings off Yorkshire! 🐬

Recent followers of Scarborough Porpoise might not realise that before 2018, these Dolphins were rare visitors to our coast, but have now become our most common cetacean visitors, seen almost daily somewhere off Yorkshire.

The expansion to our seas is part of a gradual expansion from an original area off north east Scotland over a 30+ year period. The expansion could be for a number of reasons, such as their search for food, fish, and an increasing population. It is not known for certain whether their expansion of territory is linked to climate change.

More observers of Dolphins reporting sightings will have contributed to the higher number of sightings, but does not account for the scale of this seismic change in species inhabiting our seas.

Is self-esteem the same as self-confidence? What about other similar-sounding concepts?

Self-esteem is our overall sense of personal worth and value, crucial for mental health and overall well-being (Mann et al., 2004). High self-esteem is linked to positive outcomes such as healthier relationships and greater success in personal and professional life (Baumeister et al., 2003).

It’s closely related to several other concepts, each contributing uniquely to our self-view. While these concepts are interconnected and all play a role in our self-esteem development, they are not exactly all the same thing. So, here's a quick rundown:

🌟 Self-acceptance involves embracing all aspects of oneself, including strengths and weaknesses. Unlike self-esteem, which evaluates worth, self-acceptance involves unconditional acceptance without judgment (Neff, 2003).

🌟 Self-compassion means treating oneself with kindness during tough times. It involves being understanding and supportive of oneself, unlike self-esteem, which is more about self-evaluation (Neff, 2003).

🌟 Self-respect refers to valuing oneself and demanding respect from others. Self-respect focuses on maintaining dignity and boundaries, distinct from self-esteem’s internal sense of worth (Hill & Tiedens, 2018).

🌟 Self-image is the mental picture we have of ourselves. While self-esteem is about valuing oneself, self-image is purely descriptive, detailing how one sees oneself (Markus & Nurius, 1986).

🌟 Self-confidence involves rusting in one’s abilities and judgments. Self-confidence is specific to skills and actions, whereas self-esteem is a broader sense of overall worth (Bandura, 1997).

🌟 Self-efficacy is the belief in one's capacity to achieve goals. This concept is about perceived ability in specific contexts, differentiating it from the global self-worth of self-esteem (Bandura, 1997).

Understanding and nurturing these aspects can lead to a healthier self-view and stronger self-esteem. It's important to understand which concept we are dealing with in a given situation or challenge so we can address it appropriately.
