What is pretend play?ππ§Ήππ
When a child plays with something as though itβs real and creates a situation where there is more happening than actually is. For example a child playing shops, with a toy till, using imaginary items to sell to their dolls and teddies! π
Why is pretend play important?
π§ΈIt provides an opportunity for children to practise using vocabulary and phrases that they have heard, but not had an opportunity to use.
π§Έ It helps children develop their understanding of what objects are used for, as well as an understanding of real life situations.
π§ΈIt supports the development of being able to sequence information. For example, the teddy wants to buy a book, he pays for it, the book is put in the bag and then teddy leaves the shop.
π§ΈIt helps children develop problem solving skills. For example, teddy doesnβt like that book, so heβs going to buy a bag of sweets instead!
π§ΈIt helps the development of flexible thinking and imagination.
