Ark House - an amazing place & a great help to many. If you know anyone who is self medicating with alcohol or drugs for depression/mental health, please go direct and ask them to help you get them the right help. Maybe we can save others. It’s not a choice, it’s an illness.
I don’t normally share things personal to me, but I feel this time I will.
I wish i knew about Ark House back when my best friend/ex Midge he was really struggling.
He had severe depression and was self medicating as he had no professional help, a total lack of support from all those qualified professionals I involved in his care, his GP, Mental Health services (despite me asking, getting him assessed, begging them to send him to rehab). They said “it’s his choice to drink”.
I can honestly say failed him between 2007-2012. They said again “it’s his choice to drink”!
This man used to be a body builder 24 stone, he self neglecting, falling, dropping to 6 stone. He lost balance and couldn’t manage to eat or manage his personal care. Again they said “It’s his choice to drink”!
They gave him 10 day detox which he did as he wanted help, (he tried numerous times as he was desperate to get better) but no support was given from day 10, so he would start drinking again.
“It’s his choice they said”! Words I’ve never been able to forget and still haunt me to this day.
As a qualified therapist myself it’s so frustrating knowing I couldn’t do anything to help, apart from be there as his friend.
I begged, I got him assessed by professionals that I believed could have done something. I was wrong.
When talking to his community nurse about no support during or after 10 days of detox, she said she has a pocket of people self medicating for depression in the community doing the same, that will probably just eventually die.
And yes, die he died.
Absolutely boils my blood.
Addiction is a very misunderstood thing as it can come with unruly behaviour, which people don’t want to be around or associated with, which I can understand.
It’s not just that they are just addicts, most are struggling with their Mental Health or as a result of terrible inflicted abuse or awful childhood trauma. They deserve help like anyone else. I just wish there was more help out there like Ark House.
I do believe care should start with GPs and mental health services, who need to ensure these people get the help and not be turned away, due to it’s their choice.
If I get any Enquirys of this nature il know where to send them.
RIP midge.
