Not all families have equal access to neonatal care. If you’re facing challenges due to distance or finances:

🗣️ Ask hospital staff about accommodation options

🚗 Ask hospital staff about parking concessions

🚌 Ask hospital staff about local public transport schemes

Every family deserves the same opportunities to be close to their baby, regardless of location. If you have any suggestions for parents facing location challenges, let us know in the comments. 👇

SCBU Graduate, Teddy ⭐️🧑‍🎓

Some lovely words from Teddy’s mum: ‘Teddy was my second baby and after a rough pregnancy I was induced at 37+2 weeks. Ted couldn’t maintain his oxygen levels and his blood sugar levels, he also had jaundice and sepsis. The nurse looking after Ted said he was the biggest baby she had ever had on scbu though he’s just a little man now. I was very lucky during Covid for Ted to be the only baby on scbu so his daddy could visit. The care Ted received was second to none and we couldn’t be more thankful for the care we both received from hawthorn and scbu❤️’

❕Interested in your ‘little one’ featuring? Message our page ☺️ they may have been on SCBU for 30 minutes or 30 days, we’d love to see them all ✨

Have you heard of Vitamin K?

Vitamin K is something your midwife will discuss with you. This is normally given in the first couple of hours after birth for baby. Vitamin K is recommended to prevent a rare but serious blood clotting disorder called hemorrhagic disease of the newborn HDN or Vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding (VKDB). Babies are born with low Vitamin K levels at birth, Without Vitamin K blood cannot clot.

Studies show that in babies who do not receive vitamin K, the risk to the baby of developing VKDB is one in 10,000. However, it is not possible to predict which babies are at risk of bleeding. We do know that this potentially dangerous condition can be reduced by giving the baby vitamin K after birth

It is parental decision if you want your baby to have Vitamin K. Vitamin K can be provided either as an injection or as an oral dose and is considered safe. Both have their pros and cons. Injections tend to be the more preferred choice as oral Vitamin K may not be as effective. The injection is provided as a one off dose whereas the oral route is provided over a few doses in the early days after birth.

Know your options - reach out to the ask a midwife team if you have any questions ❓

Some fab stickers from The Smallest Things Charity - for Premature Babies & Their Families for families to have!

Most use these on their red books to highlight to other healthcare professionals that their baby has spent time on the neonatal unit 🌿

Please ask a member of staff if you’d like one 🫶🏻

We know that for many families there can be barriers to being by their baby's side in NICU. Some families face long, expensive or difficult journeys to the neonatal unit, especially those without access to a car, or living far from the hospital.

If transport is a challenge, ask unit staff about:

🚅Hospital travel schemes
🚗Help with parking costs
🏨Speak to the unit staff about your accommodation options
