It’s quite common for people to notice changes in their jaw after dental work.

Holding the mouth open, combined with pressure, injections or procedures like extractions, can all influence how the jaw and surrounding tissues feel.

For many, this settles quickly. But if the jaw was already sensitive or holding tension, it can sometimes linger or trigger symptoms.

This month I’ll be exploring the connection between dental work and prolonged jaw pain in more depth in my newsletter.

If you’d like to receive it, you can sign up via the link below.

One of the most meaningful parts of this work is seeing people reconnect with their own bodies.

When pain has been there for a long time, it can start to feel normal and is something you just live with.

But it doesn’t have to stay that way.

Helping someone move from tension to ease, from holding to softening, from discomfort to comfort, that shift is never something I take for granted.

Being able to pass this work on to other practitioners, so more people can experience that change, makes it even more powerful 💙

Jaw pain is one of the most misunderstood areas of the body.

Many people are told to ignore it, push through it or assume something is seriously wrong, when often the reality is more nuanced.

When we take time to understand what’s really driving the symptoms, the approach becomes clearer and the results are often much more effective.

Awareness is always the first step 💙

“But I thought you just worked on the jaw?”

It’s something I hear often but the truth is, jaw pain is rarely isolated.

The way we stand, move and hold tension through the body all influences how the jaw functions. Working through the feet, hips, neck or shoulders can all play a role in helping the jaw soften and release.

This is what a whole-body approach looks like.

Looking beyond the symptoms and treating the system as a whole.

Cases like this are a good reminder that jaw pain is rarely just about the jaw.

Stress, sleep, lifestyle and daily habits all play a role in how symptoms present and how they progress over time.

Emma approached this case with a whole-body perspective, combining hands-on treatment with simple, supportive changes to help the client feel more in control.

As she reflected: “The holistic treatment plan for this patient really seemed to help them gain the control of the condition they wanted.”

And that’s often the shift we’re aiming for, not just reducing pain, but helping someone feel like they understand their body again and have a way forward.

The body keeps track of more than we realise.

Stress, pressure, unspoken tension, it all has somewhere to go. More often than not, the jaw is where it begins to show.

Where do you notice your body holds tension? 💙

Hands-on work is where the real understanding comes from.

It’s not just about technique, it’s about feeling, responding and adapting in real time to what the body needs.

No two sessions are ever the same, because no two bodies present in the same way.

This is why I continue to stay in clinic. It keeps the work grounded, evolving and real. And I LOVE it!

We’ve reached the final week of the March Level 1 TMJ Massage Therapies® course.

Over the past four weeks these practitioners have explored anatomy, assessment, the treatment protocol and the wider whole-body connections that influence jaw pain. Watching that understanding come together is always one of my favourite parts of the course.

Many of them will soon be joining the TMJ Massage Therapies® Graduate Directory, a growing network of practitioners around the world trained in this whole-body approach to treating TMJ Dysfunction.

If you’re looking for support with jaw pain, you can explore the directory to find a practitioner near you.

And if you’re a practitioner interested in learning this work, the next Level 1 TMJ Massage Therapies® Online CPD Course will begin in June 2026.

You can join the priority registration list now to be first to hear when enrolment opens 💙

Clenching during concentration, holding stress in the face, long hours at a laptop or looking down at phones, it all adds up.

Over time these small daily habits can leave the jaw feeling tight, tired or overloaded.

The Jaw Ball Method® grew from the techniques and exercises I used to relax, release and soften my own jaw during the Covid lockdown, when times were stressful and hands-on therapy was unavailable.

Sometimes a few minutes of gentle release is all it takes to remind the jaw how to soften again.

Many people are surprised when they realise how often their teeth are touching during the day.

Concentration has a way of pulling the jaw into action. It’s not always obvious grinding, more often it’s a subtle holding pattern that runs in the background for hours at a time.

The jaw is designed to rest. Teeth slightly apart. Tongue soft against the palate. Breath moving freely.
