Did you know that the excitement and nerves have the same reaction in the body? What we can control is how our mind interprets that reaction. And we can control that with our thoughts.

🧠What we THINK- Becomes what we FEEL
And what we FEEL- Becomes what we BELIEVE 🧠

This is particularly useful when it comes to supporting teenagers through their exams, helpful self-talk can turn overwhelming nerves, into 'I'm gonna smash it' confidence.

Stop telling your teens to ‘take deep breaths’ when they are angry or anxious and try this instead:

4 7 8
Breathe in for 4 seconds
Hold for 7 seconds
Breathe out for 8 seconds

Repeat until calm 😌

Does your teenager struggle to get organised for revision? Are they always leaving homework or assignments until the last minute? Do they get themselves into a tizzy (technical term) with all the work they have to do?

Well, it may not be their fault at all, but their brains!

The part of the brain that is in charge of planning and organising (the pre-frontal cortex) is actually one of the last parts to develop! It isn't actually fully developed until around the age of 25! So no wonder they struggle.

However, there are some things that you can do to help:
🧠 Try a planning app to structure their time, they may need your help setting it up. https://getrevising.co.uk/planner has a great one
🧠Get them to make post it notes of tricky facts or equations and put them around the house in places where they will notice them, on their mirror, the door, on the biscuit tin etc
🧠If they need to remember something important, remind them again, and again, and again! And try not to take it personally if they still forget. Lists, calendars and to do lists all help too.
🧠Encourage them to do one thing at a time. Multitasking (including watching tv or using a mobile phone) has been shown to increase the time it takes a teenager to complete a piece of work by anywhere from 25 to a whopping 400%!
🧠Above all try to empathise, they're usually doing the best that they can
