Counsellors are not trained to give a medical diagnosis, but counselling may help clients to cope with and come to terms with their issues following a diagnosis of mental or physical health conditions. How and Why this business was set up - After a life time in office work, which ended with the choice of redundancy or a demotion and less pay; I decided to attempt to trai

n as a mental health counsellor. I had thought about it for a few years, following some amazing personal therapy of my own. However, I never seriously considered leaving my (at that time safe) job. The enforced loss of my job, gave me the opportunity to start afresh and to be honest, it was uncharacteristic of me to jump at it! I had planned to start at the first stage of training, but was prevented from doing so, due to the lack of available local training. Instead, I was accepted on to the level 3 counsellor training and was fascinated from the beginning; learning about psychology, human development etc. At the end of the course, someone mentioned going to university to do a degree. I laughed at this idea; at my stage of life and after a less than positive experience of education in the past; I didn't believe I was clever enough to undertake such a thing. However, the more I thought about it, the more appealing it became. I enrolled and spent the next two years studying. It was hard work, soul destroying at times and very challenging in all sorts of ways. It was also a time of personal growth for me. I became self reflective about my upbringing; my attitudes towards events, people and what is important to me in life and how to deal with it. I began volunteering for a local charity and was extremely nervous when meeting my first client, but I felt great afterwards; because I realised how much knowledge I had acquired and how helpful it was going to be to me - to help others. I began Serene Talking Therapy in 2017, with little idea about starting a business, but a desire to help other people. The feeling you get when someone's life has started to change and they can see meaning and purpose for the future, is simply wonderful. When they have released their grief, guilt, shame, negative thought processes - whatever it might be and start to feel happier and more confident, it makes me feel that I have truly made a difference to them. All of my practice is supported by the BACP (British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists) Ethical Framework and a private Supervisor, who helps me to be a better counsellor and person. I hope this account gives some insight into my personality and encourages you to think about reaching out for the help you may need.

Hi everyone,

I've been reading a book, about the effects smart phones and social media have had on young people. It's described as "rewriting of the brain"

I am not against technology, but some of the findings in this book, are very alarming. With reflection, I realised that I have witnessed many of them.

Young people have been affected in different ways. Girls are often influenced by celebrities and have a constant commentary on the lives of their friends; but these days they rarely spend time together. The social media content can drive girls to develop eating disorders and body dysmorphia. Feelings of inadequacy, because they feel that they are not good enough, compared to others.

Boys seem to be more attracted to gaming, which often have high levels of violence. They can easily access explicit p**n sites and witness unrealistic imagery and misogyny. Some sites portray girls and women as vehicles for their sexual fantasies, rather than humans with thoughts and feelings. This, arguably, influences a lack of respect and the possibility of sexual abuse and violence.

On the subject of remote working, counselling seems to be increasingly embracing online work. I feel that this is a mistake. I can understand the convenience, but when someone is feeling isolated and lacking social connections; remote sessions, seem to me to be counter productive.

Embarking on counselling (face to face) can be daunting, but the human connection is really important. It gives the client a focus; to leave home and attend regular appointments. The therapist can observe clients for signs of discomfort or distress, allowing space as needed, showing empathy and support. After a virtual session (which technology can disrupt, due to poor internet connection), the session is ended and the client is alone again; perhaps wrestling with their emotions or thoughts.

The media reports, that unemployment figures have risen, but vacancies are fewer. I worry that this situation is going to get worse. Companies are investing in robots, AI etc., and jobs are disappearing, with little sign of the "quality jobs" for humans, we were promised.

So, in conclusion, my questions are:-
How much time do you spend on your phone, rather than socialising in person or doing other activities?

How much anxiety is caused by constantly connecting with negativity on your phone, whether that be global/local news or people you know or people you don't?

Do you feel uplifted and positive when you to put your phone down? Does it affect how you perceive yourself physically and intellectually?
Are you bullied or coerced online by people you regard as friends?

Do adverts bombard you? Are notifications popping up constantly?
These things disrupt your ability to think and concentrate. More importantly, they prevent you from truly relaxing and having quality sleep.

I truly believe that face to face connections are the most beneficial way to communicate and connect with others! What do you think? πŸ™‚

Hi everyone!

Did you know that depression can come on very gradually and the truth is, we get used to feeling bad and carry on regardless 😐

Sometimes we get physical symptoms which force us to take action and seek support from a medical professional; alternatively, we might get up one morning and just think, I can't do this any more πŸ˜”

The resource I have attached, describes some of the problems we may have.

Do you recognise any of them?

Seek help from a doctor or from a service like mine, which can help you to understand it and to work through it, without pressure or judgement.

Depression can happen to anyone, it's nothing to feel ashamed about (but people do!). It's can be caused by many different things and can be mistaken for a variety of conditions.

I got out of bed this morning and saw that the weather was fair, which made me feel grateful. Downstairs, with bowl of cereals in hand and a cup of coffee close by, I put the television on.

That was when it all changed ! πŸ˜•

Goodness, what a lot of worrying reports of war, attacks, deaths, threats exchanged etc. etc. It's enough to make you want to go back to bed, but I didn't !! ☺️

I changed channel and watched something much more cheerful πŸ˜„

It's not good to bury your head in the sand, but restricting your consumption of media, television news etc., can help to lighten your mood. We all know these are serious times and there are reports of increased support needed, due to the anxiety the world news is creating (and at home). However, it's important to focus on the here and now and maybe Spring can put the spring in your step.

What to you think?
