Hi everyone,
I've been reading a book, about the effects smart phones and social media have had on young people. It's described as "rewriting of the brain"
I am not against technology, but some of the findings in this book, are very alarming. With reflection, I realised that I have witnessed many of them.
Young people have been affected in different ways. Girls are often influenced by celebrities and have a constant commentary on the lives of their friends; but these days they rarely spend time together. The social media content can drive girls to develop eating disorders and body dysmorphia. Feelings of inadequacy, because they feel that they are not good enough, compared to others.
Boys seem to be more attracted to gaming, which often have high levels of violence. They can easily access explicit p**n sites and witness unrealistic imagery and misogyny. Some sites portray girls and women as vehicles for their sexual fantasies, rather than humans with thoughts and feelings. This, arguably, influences a lack of respect and the possibility of sexual abuse and violence.
On the subject of remote working, counselling seems to be increasingly embracing online work. I feel that this is a mistake. I can understand the convenience, but when someone is feeling isolated and lacking social connections; remote sessions, seem to me to be counter productive.
Embarking on counselling (face to face) can be daunting, but the human connection is really important. It gives the client a focus; to leave home and attend regular appointments. The therapist can observe clients for signs of discomfort or distress, allowing space as needed, showing empathy and support. After a virtual session (which technology can disrupt, due to poor internet connection), the session is ended and the client is alone again; perhaps wrestling with their emotions or thoughts.
The media reports, that unemployment figures have risen, but vacancies are fewer. I worry that this situation is going to get worse. Companies are investing in robots, AI etc., and jobs are disappearing, with little sign of the "quality jobs" for humans, we were promised.
So, in conclusion, my questions are:-
How much time do you spend on your phone, rather than socialising in person or doing other activities?
How much anxiety is caused by constantly connecting with negativity on your phone, whether that be global/local news or people you know or people you don't?
Do you feel uplifted and positive when you to put your phone down? Does it affect how you perceive yourself physically and intellectually?
Are you bullied or coerced online by people you regard as friends?
Do adverts bombard you? Are notifications popping up constantly?
These things disrupt your ability to think and concentrate. More importantly, they prevent you from truly relaxing and having quality sleep.
I truly believe that face to face connections are the most beneficial way to communicate and connect with others! What do you think? π
