Your immune system doesn’t work alone

Have you noticed that after a long period of stress you’re more likely to pick up colds, urinary infections, skin flare-ups, thrush, or viral reactivations like cold sores?

You are not imagining it… Research shows that sustained stress can weaken immune defences and make us more prone to acute illness.
That’s because the immune system is closely linked with other body systems:

The nervous system: Stress signals from the brain keep the “fight or flight” response switched on. This raises cortisol and suppresses immune cell activity, which is why viral flare-ups such as colds, cold sores, or even shingles often follow stressful times.

The digestive system: Around 70% of our immune cells are found in the gut. Stress disrupts the balance of gut microbes, leaving us more vulnerable to infections.

The endocrine system: Hormones like thyroid, adrenal, and s*x hormones act as messengers that regulate immune tone over the long term. When they are out of balance, the body may recover more slowly or become prone to recurring infections.

Metabolic health: How we process energy and regulate inflammation also affects immunity. Disrupted blood sugar control or chronic inflammation can place extra strain on the immune system, making it harder to stay well.

That’s why herbalists like to look at the root causes of health issues for each individual: to help restore resilience, not just address symptoms.

Adaptogens such as Withania (Ashwagandha) or Siberian ginseng are traditionally used to support the stress response and help maintain immune resilience.
