Gratitude
Why do folks go on about the importance of becoming consciously Grateful?
On days when everything feels difficult, and there seem to be a never endung trail of obstacles in your path, it’s easy to lose sight completely of gratitude, and replace it with frustration, anger, fear …
So on those days, ‘how in the world are you supposed to start feeling grateful?’, you might wonder.
Well, it’s really all about mindset.
By that I don’t just mean some pat wellness pep talk. ‘Be grateful! Or else’ No that’s not it.
It’s neuroscience.
Our brains work in ‘mysterious’ ways … well not so mysterious as we begin to understand more and more about how they work.
By recognising good things about our lives, we help the brain to rehearse or practice feeling good.
The brain learns through repetition.
So if we practice gratitude and the good feelings (happy neurotransmitters snd happy hormones) then we get better at it.
So taking a few moments each day - I do this every morning - to notice what is good in our lives, perhaps write yourself a list or a mantra and pin it on your bathroom mirror, as one of my clients chose to do, can be hugely helpful to feeling good, even when times bring challenges.
“The amount of good things in your life depends on your ability to notice them.”
No idea who said that originally.
Google says it is often attributed to Alfred Adler, an Austrian psychotherapist and founder of individual psychology. I read it recently, attributed to a stranger on a ferry. But it is a statement of truth.
So here’s how to get started.
When you wake up, take a moment to appreciate being alive, being safe, having a home, and any number of other things we might take for granted … but they are not givens, so give them the recognition they deserve and feel the gratitude.
Everything you can add to that feels even more amazing.
Positive Thinking - Noticing ‘What’s Been Good’ is a fundamental principle in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy.
