Thickened toenails are a common issue that can result from a variety of causes.

Some of the most common factors include:

1. Fungal Infections:

Fungal infections like onychomycosis can cause toenails to thicken, discolor, and become brittle.

2. Injury or Trauma:

Repeated trauma or injury to the toenail can lead to thickening as the nail grows back.

3. Aging:

As we age, toenails can naturally become thicker, slower to grow, and more prone to changes.

4. Psoriasis:

This skin condition can also affect the nails, causing thickening, pitting, or separation from the nail bed.

5. Poor Circulation:

Conditions like diabetes or peripheral vascular disease can lead to thickening of the toenails due to reduced blood flow.

6. Unsuitable Footwear:

Tight shoes or ill-fitting footwear can lead to pressure on the nails, causing them to thicken over time.

If you're noticing changes in your toenails, it’s important to get them checked out by a Podiatrist.

Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent complications and restore nail health! ✨️

Check out the transformation of a lovely patient I visited today 👣

After discussing his medical history and current medications I did a thorough assessment then we decided on a treatment plan to address his discomfort.

I began treatment by thinning the toenails before cutting them to a more comfortable length relieving the pressure and pain he had been experiencing.

We had a chat about general foot hygiene, footwear and the use of an urea based foot moisturiser (emollient)... As its not that easy for him to reach his feet we talked about ways of getting around this.

Going forward, we’ve planned regular follow-up treatments every 6 weeks to monitor his progress and prevent any recurrence.

It's always a pleasure helping patients regain comfort, mobility and improve their quality of life.

If you or someone you know is dealing with painful toenails, please don't hesitate to reach out! 🫶🏼

Greek Toe: When the second toe is longer than the big toe.

Venus de Milo has it, Leonardo de Vinci’s Vitruvian man has it, Michelangelo's David has it.

Are you one of the 15–20 percent of the population to have it; a Greek toe, or foot, medically known as Morton’s toe?

If so, in ancient Greece, you would have been considered creative, have great leadership qualities and be the life and soul of the party.

Ancient Greeks, rather than following the boring rule of proportion, as the Egyptians, centuries before they did, went with the "Golden Ratio", or " Divine Proportion", the root of sacred geometry.

Examples of the "Golden Ratio", were to be found everywhere in ancient Greece; in art, sculpture, architecture and yes, even in toes!

The Importance of Footwear 👟

Footwear plays a crucial role in maintaining overall foot health, often more than we realize. Here are several reasons why choosing the right shoes is essential:

**Support and Alignment**

Proper footwear provides necessary support for the arches and heels, helping maintain the natural alignment of the feet. This support can prevent issues like flat feet and plantar fasciitis.

**Cushioning**

Quality shoes offer cushioning that absorbs impact with each step. This is vital for reducing stress on joints and minimizing fatigue, especially for those who spend long hours on their feet.

**Protection**

Shoes protect feet from injuries, environmental hazards, and harsh surfaces. Well-constructed footwear shields against cuts, scrapes, and other injuries that can occur when walking or running.

**Stability**

Footwear designed for specific activities enhances stability, reducing the risk of falls and ankle sprains. Whether you’re running, walking, or participating in sports, the right shoes provide the grip and support needed.

**Improved Performance**

For athletes and active individuals, proper footwear can enhance performance. Shoes designed for specific activities can improve efficiency and reduce the risk of overuse injuries.

**Skin Health**

Breathable materials and proper fit help prevent blisters, calluses, and fungal infections. Shoes that allow for good airflow and moisture-wicking properties keep feet healthy.

**Long-term Benefits**
Investing in quality footwear can lead to long-term benefits, reducing the likelihood of chronic conditions like arthritis and tendonitis. Proper shoes contribute to overall body mechanics, promoting better posture and reducing back pain.

Footwear is not just a fashion statement; it is a vital component of foot health. Choosing shoes that fit well, provide support, and cater to specific activities can significantly impact your overall well-being. Prioritize your foot health by selecting the right footwear for your needs.

How Podiatrists Can Identify Health Problems 🦶🏼👀

Podiatrists play a crucial role in overall healthcare, as they often serve as the first line of defense for various health issues. Their specialized training allows them to recognize signs of systemic conditions through foot examinations. Here are some key ways podiatrists can pick up on health problems:

💢Diabetes Management💢

Diabetes can lead to foot complications, including neuropathy and poor circulation. Podiatrists routinely check for ulcers, skin changes, and loss of sensation, which can indicate worsening diabetes control. Patient education is crucial.

💢Circulatory Issues💢

Foot and leg examinations can reveal signs of poor circulation. Podiatrists look for color changes, hair loss on the legs, and cold extremities, which may suggest peripheral artery disease.

💢Arthritis Detection💢

Foot pain can be a symptom of various types of arthritis. Podiatrists assess joint stiffness, swelling, and range of motion to help diagnose conditions like osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.

💢Neurological Disorders💢

Conditions such as multiple sclerosis or stroke can affect foot function. Podiatrists conduct sensory tests and evaluate balance to identify potential neurological issues early.

💢Skin and Nail Conditions💢

Changes in skin texture, colour, or nail growth can signal underlying health problems, such as fungal infections, psoriasis, or even systemic diseases like lupus.

💢Obesity and Gait Analysis💢

Obesity can lead to biomechanical problems and increase the risk of various health issues. Podiatrists analyze a patient's gait and provide recommendations that can alleviate pain and improve overall health.

💢Overall Foot Health 💢

The state of one’s feet can reflect broader health trends. Issues like persistent foot pain or unusual symptoms can be red flags for other medical conditions that need further investigation.

👇🏼Conclusion👇🏼

Podiatrists are not just foot specialists; they are integral to holistic healthcare. Regular visits can help catch early signs of systemic health issues, ultimately leading to better outcomes. If you notice changes in your feet, don’t hesitate to consult a podiatrist—your feet may hold valuable insights into your overall health.
