A recent RHS magazine talks about the Science of Scent.
How a scent can ‘stop you in your tracks’ as you get a memory floating to the surface you’d forgotten.
Of course as aromatherapists we know all about this 😀😇 but it’s a great article and talks about how to train your nose
Here’s a way:
Practice smelling regularly to sharpen your sense of smell. Focus on individual scents, compare similar plants, and try breathing through one nostril at a time. Notice how aromas change with time or touch, like crushed leaves. Smell plants like lavender to explore layered scents. Keep notes to expand your scent vocabulary and deepen your awareness.
A recent client had lost their sense of smell, but it didn’t affect our work together. Since the focus was on treating their physical pain, the therapeutic benefits came from the actions of the essential oils rather than aroma, proving that effective treatment doesn’t always rely on scent.
This has come to the fore much more since Covid. Has anyone lost their sense of smell, or lost it and it’s come back? Has it affected you and your everyday life?
