Let’s celebrate the ultimate Love hero this valentines!

OXYTOCIN! - Why do us midwives bang on about it all the time?!?

Did you know that oxytocin, often referred to as the “love hormone,” plays a crucial role during pregnancy and childbirth? 🤰💖 This incredible hormone is not only vital for bonding and emotional connection but also essential for labour and birth.

👉 What is Oxytocin?
Oxytocin is produced in the hypothalamus and released by the pituitary gland. During pregnancy, its levels increase, helping to stimulate uterine contractions and promote cervical dilation as your body prepares for birth.

👉 Why is Oxytocin Important?
1. Facilitates Birth: Oxytocin triggers contractions, making it a key player in the progression of labour. The stronger and more effective your contractions, the smoother the delivery!

2. Enhances Bonding: After birth, oxytocin helps create that immediate bond between you and your newborn. Skin-to-skin contact releases oxytocin, fostering attachment and promoting breastfeeding.

3. Reduces Stress: This hormone has calming effects, which can help reduce anxiety and stress during labour. A relaxed environment can lead to a more positive birthing experience.

4. Supports Breastfeeding: Oxytocin promotes milk ejection during breastfeeding, making it easier for you and your baby to establish a successful nursing relationship.

5. Aids in Recovery: High levels of oxytocin can help the uterus contract after birth, reducing postpartum bleeding and aiding in recovery.

Understanding the role of oxytocin can empower you to create a supportive environment for its release during labour, birth and postpartum. Surround yourself with loved ones, choose a calming atmosphere, and embrace skin-to-skin contact with your baby to harness the full benefits of this amazing hormone.

✨ Remember, birthing is not just a physical process; it’s also a profound emotional journey. let oxytocin work its magic! ✨
