Freebirth mum delivers baby in ocean: ‘Made me feel really good’

A new mum has gone viral after sharing a video of her “freebirth” into the waves of the Pacific Ocean. Josy Peukert, 37, uploaded a post on Instagram showing how she and her partner drove to the beach so she could have her baby on the shoreline of Playa Majagual, Nicaragua, with the water lapping at her back.

‘I got this idea in my head I wanted to give birth in the ocean and because the conditions were right on the day that’s what I did.’

She delivered her baby without medical assistance in a so-called 'free birth', after turning down scans throughout her pregnancy.

When she finally went into labor on Feb. 27, 2022, Peukert’s existing children went to stay with friends, while her husband Benni Cornelius, 42, drove her to the beach with towels, gauze and a bowl with a “sieve to catch the placenta.”

After giving birth to her son — fittingly named Bodhi Amor Ocean Cornelius — the happy couple drove home and weighed the child, who clocked in at 7 pounds and 6 ounces.

Along with the presumed symbolism of giving birth where life originated, Peukert wanted to avoid previous traumatic experiences she had giving birth at the hospital.

“My first birth was traumatic in a clinic and my second birth was a home birth but by the third even a midwife in my home was too much,” lamented Peukert, who has seven children with her husband. “This time I had no doctors appointments or scans or outside influence.

She added, “We didn’t have a due date or deadline for the baby to arrive, we just trusted that our baby would make its way.”

YogaBirth classes are not only about asanas and yoga postures; they work for the empowerment and support of the pregnant woman in a holistic, full body way.

✨Mind, body and spirit.✨

This is what is unique about our classes.

We have a wealth of expertise which comes from honing and really understanding and trusting the birth process. Our classes offer that oxytocin-rich environment needed to relax the nervous system of the pregnant woman which can often be sabotaged by fear and anxiety. Our classes help to create a calm birthing woman ready to meet her baby in a calm and loving way.

The empowerment begins before the birth. We offer that opportunity to examine, investigate and research what you really want; not from the mind, but from the body. The part that knows how to birth without fear.

Our YogaBirth classes feel like a warm hug. We have classes in various locations, DM us to find out about our classes near you 💕

Life with a new baby is full-on. It’s so easy to feel that “..everyone else has it sorted except me…”

YogaBirth postnatal classes create an accepting and non-judgemental community of support. Mothers show up as they really are; not as they think they should be. We help new mums grow into motherhood their own way, and to find their tribe.

Fabulous results from study 💝

Did you know ...?

First births at home are just as safe an option as subsequent births at home.

This statement is based on an in-depth meta-analysis study done in 2018, which showed that actually first births at home were just as safe as subsequent births.

Not only that, but that there were no differences in safety whether the births were intended to be at home or in hospital.

This supersedes a previous study in 2011, where the prevailing wisdom was that the birth of a second child at home was safer than a first birth at home.

So if you are enjoying a healthy pregnancy and you choose a home birth, you are making a sound, evidence-based choice.

I loved this change during my pregnancies but it can be a rollercoaster for some mums to ve 🤰🏻🙏

"Our senses are heightened during pregnancy. Some say this is a safety mechanism, but it can make life difficult if we are used to living life in the fast lane. Hormones are released into our bloodstream to facilitate pregnancy and this can bring up emotions that have lain dormant and under control for years. Not everyone finds pregnancy stressful, many women say it was the best they’ve ever felt in their lives, but many of us find the roller coaster of emotional highs and lows hard to negotiate."
