PERSONAL PROGRESS 💪

Every summer I set myself the goal of getting into "the best shape of my life" - not just solely having the lowest bodyfat or the most muscle, but also feeling my healthiest, fittest and best in general - and, most years, I fail! 😂This year is the first in a long time where I feel as though I've actually reached that goal.

It's important to remember that measurably improving your fitness - whatever your fitness goals may be - is very much a marathon, not a sprint, and it will always have its ups and downs and set backs. Don't give yourself a hard time if you don't see the results you'd like as quickly as you hoped you might. Take it one step at a time, set realistic targets, keep consistent and eventually you'll reap the rewards.

For more information on how I can help you to reach your goals, please feel free to drop me a message!

👇 CLIENT TESTIMONIAL 💥

“As someone who had already been going to the gym for 5 years I was unsure how having PT could change what I was already doing. It only took an hour for Nathan to completely change my perspective on personal training and the benefits it has.

Nathan had such in-depth knowledge that you know you are getting the best guidance and result’s possible from each PT session. He motivates you and helps you push through each exercise; even when you don’t think you can do it. The encouragement he gives leaves you feeling motivated after each session.

I can’t recommend Nathan enough.”

WHAT ARE COMPOUND LIFTS AND HOW CAN THEY BENEFIT US❔🤔

Compound lifts – such as deadlifts, squats, shoulder press and bench press – are exercises that work more than one muscle group at a time, unlike isolation movements that target one very specific area. 🏋

These movements are excellent for building strength, burn more calories than isolation exercises due to recruiting more muscles, can be a time saver for people who’s schedule only allows for shorter workouts and/or less training days and can’t necessarily spend as much time with isolating muscles individually, and can even improve your cardiovascular health with the way they elevate your heart rate. Because these movements mimic a number of real-world movements, they are also beneficial to performing day to day tasks and can reduce the risk of injury.

We should always strive for our workouts to be well-rounded and varied if we want to maintain good health and reach our goals efficiently, and so incorporating compound lifts as part of your resistance training is essential if they’re not already a mainstay! 💪

"I'm so pleased to have found Nathan, he puts me at ease and I no longer feel self-conscious when exercising. I train with two other ladies and we are all at different levels of fitness. Nathan is able to cater for all our abilities and goals without detracting from the personal experience of the session and still making it fun for us all.

I have gained so much confidence thanks to Nathan and have fallen back in love with working out."

WHY IS REST & RECOVERY SO IMPORTANT TO REACHING OUR GOALS AND FOR OUR GENERAL HEALTH❔🤔

Whether it's rest between sets, rest days or sleep, recovery is a key component in our training and our overall wellbeing.

Whilst the correct rest periods between sets allow us to perform our workout optimally and reduces the risk of injury and fatigue, recovery days give our body and muscles the chance to repair properly from our exercise. Sleep is incredibly important for all sorts of reasons, from keeping our hormones and brain chemicals in balance, to allowing us the energy to get through the day. We can't survive without it!

Don't rush your sessions, take rest days as appropriate and don't force yourself to unnecessarily overtrain, and aim to get at least 8 hours sleep every night or as close as possible as your lifestyle allows. These are integral parts of the jigsaw in achieving your goals and feeling your best! 💪💥

“I wanted a personal trainer to get in shape for my wedding and honeymoon - I am so glad I had found Nathan; he understood my goals, understood I had never lifted weights before and understood my limits right away.

He took the time to explain and demonstrate moves and also why they will work and what benefit they will have to my goals. I felt so confident after the first session. Couldn’t recommend enough."

WHAT ARE REP RANGES AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT❔🤔

When it comes to resistance training, our goals dictate which rep range we should mostly work within. Want to grow muscle? Then it’s no good doing light sets of 30. Want to improve your endurance? Lifting the heaviest weight you can for one rep isn’t going to help. Below is a simple breakdown of the basic rep ranges and what they're for:

1-5 reps: This rep range is about building pure strength and power (known as myofibril hypertrophy), less about muscle growth and size, and has basically no affect on "muscular endurance". Heavy weight (relative to you) and long rest periods of generally 3+ minutes.

6-15 reps: This rep range will still help to build strength to an extent, but focuses a lot more than the 1-5 range on muscle growth, known as sarcoplasmic hypertrophy. Most people will see the best growth from mainly working between 8-12 reps within this range, although variation and experimentation is sensible. Moderate weight (relative to you) and rest periods of 1-2 minutes.

Over 15 reps: Once we move above 15 reps, particularly as we move to 20+, the focus shifts a lot more towards muscular endurance – the ability of our muscles to perform over an extended period of time. With the focus on long term performance you won’t see any real strength or size gains in this range, but it will still help to “shape” the muscle. Lighter weight (relative to you) and rest periods of 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Build the basis of your training around the rep range that best fits what you're looking to achieve - whilst experimenting with the other ranges too if you want to be well rounded and keep shocking the muscles – and lift weights, with good technique, that challenge you within your chosen range, and you'll be on the path to reaching your goals! 🏋️🔥

HOW DO WE SET OURSELVES GOALS AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT❔🤔

When it comes to fitness, most people have some sort of goal. Some may want to lose weight, some may want to improve their performance in a sport, some may want to become physically stronger, and some may just want to feel healthier, whether that's physically, mentally or both.

Even if you don't have very specific targets with your fitness, having some sort of goal - even if it's simply wanting to feel better in yourself - is important because it will help you to stay motivated and consistent. Everyone has days where they doubt themselves or feel demotivated, and reminding ourselves of the goals we're working to achieve can be a powerful tool.

Some people have or need strict targets and time driven goals whereas others may respond better to putting a little less pressure on themselves. It's always important to remember that we're all different and that we need to figure out what works best for us as an individual. Don't worry about what others are doing, just focus on yourself.

Set goals and timeframes that work for you, create a plan to reach those goals and the results will come! 💪💥

What are micronutrients and why do we need them❔

Micronutrients – commonly known as vitamins and minerals – are nutrients that the body needs for all sorts of important functions. Although they are only needed in tiny quantities compared to macronutrients (protein, fats and carbs), vitamins and minerals play key roles in our health and the ability of our bodies to function properly. 💪

It’s important to make sure we consume a healthy daily amount of vitamins and minerals, as the effects of a deficiency in these micronutrients can range from general fatigue and lack of energy, all the way up to the development serious health conditions. ❌

Whilst all vitamins and minerals effect the body differently, the general overview is that vitamins help our blood to clot properly, help our energy levels, balance our hormonal levels, allow our immune and nervous systems to function properly, look after our hair, skin and nails, as well as a number of other functions. Vitamins are generally abundant in most fruits and vegetables. 🍏🥦🥕

Minerals also keep our energy levels in check by helping to convert the food we consume into energy, strengthening our bones and teeth and also help to support our immune systems. Foods such as nuts, seeds, cereals, meats, fish, dairy, and fruits and vegetables contain the minerals our body needs. 🥜🧀🥑
