Good morning from North Dorset — it's been a great spring so far, but a little bit of moisture would go a long way to keeping the grass growth going!

This week Andrew was asked to review a product being pushed to one of his beef clients. Being fully independent means there's no pressure either way — and on this occasion he simply couldn't see the production or cost benefit, so they left it alone. Otherwise it's been the usual diet tweaks for some housed beef cattle, and the first draft of the Cannington CowSignals® report is taking shape.

Andrew also took some time for the annual podcast review — a chance each year to step back, look at what's been done, and plan what comes next.

Speaking of the podcast, the Jeremy Perkins silage pit episode has done really well — only a handful of downloads off being our most downloaded episode in the first week, and now sitting firmly second for the year. No new episode this coming week, but season four is nearly all edited and there are some great ones to come.

Hope the week goes well on farm. Speak soon.

This week has been a bit of a funny week with lots of bits and pieces needing to be sorted rather than just a couple of things to concentrate on!

It does seem to be a great spring for grass growth though, how is it with you?

This week Andrew met a new beef client on Thursday who, while 99% forage based, just wants someone to keep an eye on things to ensure he is getting the maximum growth rates for the system he is running. The farm tries to butcher and sell as much of it's own meat, so the customers will soon tell them if things aren't right!

Otherwise Andrew acquired the new CowSignals® book which he hasn't had a chance to read yet, but is certainly looking forward to it!

Then this week saw the podcast release with Jeremy Perkins talking all things silage pits, and it's doing really well, probably a good day ahead of where Andrew expects the numbers to be these days.

Today sees the release of our next podcast and this time we talk to Jeremy Perkins from Silostop about all things silage pits!

April usually sees us release an episode ready for the forth coming silage season, but this year it appears we might be a little bit late with plenty of silage already cut in the south west since the end of March!

During our chat with Jeremy we talk about planning for your herd needs, current silage pit construction requirements, including current SAFO & COPR, requirements, along with general health & safety and being prepared for the coming season.

This week has been quiet, being a short week with a bank holiday & the usual looking after the kids on a Friday of a school holiday, along with a couple of little activities with the kids during the week.

This week saw Andrew visit his old stomping ground of Cannington College to make a CowSignals assessment.

Andrew spent the morning looking around the cows and some of the facilities. Now he just needs to write and return a report!

There are lots of positives from his visit but there are definitely a couple of smaller recommendations he can make for the benefits of the cows.

This and a good spring clean of the office where the highlights of the week!

Then for the podcast the recent episode with John Spence has become the second most listened to episode of 2026, which is great to see, and then for next week we are talking to Jeremy Perkins from Silostop looking at what you need to do if you are thinking about a new silage pit, considering the when & where, along with discussing the current regulations.

Then we also discuss pit safety, along with just generally being ready for the coming silage season.

Have you listened to our latest podcast yet?

Released last week it's now become our second most listened to episode this year!

This time we talked to John Spence from LG Seeds UK about all things clovers!

This was originally recorded in November 2025 ready for the rising soil temperatures of spring 2026, but with (again) rising nitrogen pricing/limited availability is now the time to be thinking about clovers?

We discuss the different types of clovers, the benefits they bring to the ley, to the soil and to the feed produced.

This was recorded yesterday morning but only edited and posted this morning!

This week has seen Andrew busy talking plastics, first with a day catching up with Silostop, and then a day down in Cornwall where he spoke at the Silotite Bale Wrapping Road Show.

Andrew spoke about how quality forage starts in the field, the importance of regular, and correct, testing of your forages through the season and ensuring your diets are correctly balanced for efficiency, sustainability and therefore profitability.

Otherwise this week it was setting up a CowSignals visit for next week, to review and provide a report of the current situation on farm, and can any beneficial changes be made.

Then being as it's the beginning of the month its the usual invoicing and accounting with the VAT return already submitted, so ahead of the curve for once!

Then with the podcast we saw the release of the episode with John Spence talking Clovers.

This episode is where we would expect it to be by the weekend, achieving a Top 25% position within the first three days.

Otherwise it's Easter so hope all goes well on farm, without any problems.

Interesting day yesterday down in Cornwall as Andrew was asked to speak on the Silotite Bale Wrapping Roadshow.

Andrew spoke about how quality forage starts in the field, the importance of regular, and correct, testing of your forages through the season and ensuring your diets are correctly balanced for efficiency, sustainability and therefore profitability.

As well as a number of industry speakers, there was a demonstration of the Baletite net replacement film through the McHale Fusion Plus.

It was also interesting to hear the journey of our host, Sam Bloye, who not only runs a contracting business, Tamar Agri Ltd, but also has a recycling business, B&B Contractors Ltd, and so knows that he can't recycling the net wrap and so has transition to the net replacement film because he knows he can recycle it, so making the whole system more sustainable, on his own and other's farms.
