Labour starts following 4 main events;
𧑠Baby's lungs reach maturity and begin producing Surfactant - this helps prevent their lungs from collapsing and eases breathing after birth
𧑠The placenta initiates a 'hormonal cascade' increasing estrogen and prostaglandin levels
𧑠The pressure of baby's head on the cervix releases oxytocin which triggers contractions. This becomes a positive feedback loop as the more pressure on the cervix, the more oxytocin is produced and the stronger contractions become
𧑠Mother and baby's bodies synchronize and work together to position baby as labour begins
With all of this needing to fall into place before labour can begin, there's no quick fix to starting it off!
Dates can help ripen the cervix, but they don't start labour.
Raspberry leaf tea can tone the uterus, but it doesn't start labour.
Sitting on a birth ball can help get baby into position, but it doesn't start labour.
The same goes for spicy food, s*x, curb walking... All those old wives tales that don't actually start labour.
In a healthy, low-risk pregnancy, the best method of starting labour is patience. Let your baby and body set the pace and decide when they're ready for birth. In turn, this will reduce the need for interventions, allow you to have the best chance of a physiological birth, and put you in the best position for recovery and bonding with baby after birth.
