Almost 5 years on from my first pregnancy and birth experience, these are a few of the things I would consider doing differently, or learn about before baby's arrival, if I had my time again.

That's not to say I regret any part of my birth and motherhood journeys, they are rich with love and the experience and knowledge I had at the time. They were the right way to do things for the version of myself that experienced them. I don't wish I'd had a different experience in any way because what I experienced is what brought me to my work now.

However, with the increased knowledge I now possess, these are some things I would have recommended for myself, or with hindsight done differently. They might be helpful for you to reflect on ahead of your own journey.

If you've already experienced pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, what would your reflections be now?

It's time...

❌ It's a MYTH that an increase in baby's movement is not a concern...

Everyone talks about reduced movement, but an increase in movements can also be a potential concern - in reality ANY CHANGE to your baby's normal pattern of movement should be checked.

Pack my Birth Support bag with me!

These are all the things I bring as a Birth Doula to support labouring parents - they serve a wide range of purposes from facilitating physical support to helping create a calm birthing environment.

Not mentioned are snacks and water - I always bring a variety of these for my clients and myself as labour can be a long process. My go-to snacks include dried fruit, cereal bars, pretzels, sweets or chocolate, honey sticks, coconut water, isotonic sports drinks (flat not carbonated), and water.

Postpartum is far beyond 12 weeks after birth, for many women it can take years to physically, mentally, and emotionally heal from birth as they navigate all the changes that come with having a baby, and finding themselves in motherhood.

Matrescence is a huge transition that not only changes what your day to day life looks like, but also brings physical changes to your brain as it adapts to motherhood.

It's not something to take lightly, or ignore in a rush to 'bounce back'. In today's fast paced world, it can be a rare thing to slow down and allow yourself grace and time to heal completely πŸ’š

World Breastfeeding in Public Day 2026

Be visible, be proud!

Ask any mum who's breastfed; it can be a daunting thing the first time you feed in public, but the more you do it, the more confident you feel. And then one day you'll find yourself walking round Tesco, or at the beach, feeding without a care in the world!

In the UK, breastfeeding is protected by law meaning you can feed anywhere you have the right to be. So feed with confidence and know you just might be the reason someone else has the confidence to do so too πŸ’š

Labour starts following 4 main events;

🧑 Baby's lungs reach maturity and begin producing Surfactant - this helps prevent their lungs from collapsing and eases breathing after birth

🧑 The placenta initiates a 'hormonal cascade' increasing estrogen and prostaglandin levels

🧑 The pressure of baby's head on the cervix releases oxytocin which triggers contractions. This becomes a positive feedback loop as the more pressure on the cervix, the more oxytocin is produced and the stronger contractions become

🧑 Mother and baby's bodies synchronize and work together to position baby as labour begins

With all of this needing to fall into place before labour can begin, there's no quick fix to starting it off!

Dates can help ripen the cervix, but they don't start labour.
Raspberry leaf tea can tone the uterus, but it doesn't start labour.
Sitting on a birth ball can help get baby into position, but it doesn't start labour.
The same goes for spicy food, s*x, curb walking... All those old wives tales that don't actually start labour.

In a healthy, low-risk pregnancy, the best method of starting labour is patience. Let your baby and body set the pace and decide when they're ready for birth. In turn, this will reduce the need for interventions, allow you to have the best chance of a physiological birth, and put you in the best position for recovery and bonding with baby after birth.

Your breastmilk is incredible!

βœ… It's a FACT that it changes in content on a feed by feed basis to perfectly meet your baby's needs

✨ Your body uses live feedback through salivary transfer when baby latches, as well as pathogen sampling when you kiss and snuggle your baby to decode what their body needs and adjust your milk as required! It changes in fat, water and antibody content, as well as adjusting calorie density and milk temperature throughout the day and night.

Truly tailor made for your little one!
