“One small step for man” - one giant rest for manKind.
Today something wonderful happened, my eldest son asked if I could teach him yoga. I have been very mindful about not pushing yoga onto my kids, and if ever the moment came, I knew it had to come from them. I never wanted to add yoga to the never ending list of nagging demands- have you cleaned your room, brushed your teeth, done your homework, pulled those fossilised carrots out from behind your chest of drawers?(!) So I was touched when my son asked if I could teach him a practice. It has been a highlight of the year for sure. I worry (a lot) about the state of the world they are growing up in with some super damaging influences whether it’s from toxic male influencers, online chat groups or just some of the messed up things that seem to happen at high school. Sometimes I look at these young boys and it seems like the only way to cope with this rocky and thorny landscape is to grow an impenetrable shell and convince yourself that you can’t feel anything- armour for the heart.. That sweet, soft, sensitive, boyish curiosity and wonder seems to evaporate and is replaced with a shrug and a “yeah I’m not bothered.” So I’m very glad and grateful that today we did get bothered- lit some incense and played a bit of lo-fi in the shed on a Sunday morning. It was a very pleasurable way to hang out together. I loved observing him in this stillness, the low hanging incense swirling around him like an angelic zephyr. I asked Rory how he felt afterwards and he said he felt like his mind slowed down and his body felt relaxed- he nearly fell asleep. Simple, honest feed back that is basically the definition of “Yoga chitta vritti nirodha” So Patanjali himself would be pleased to hear that. Yoga provides a soft place to land in an all too hard world I’m glad that for today my son found a soft landing in his breath.
