πMobility of intradural nerve root.
πUpper image: in the upper lumbar region the axilla, or point of departure of the root sleeve (arrow) is located well below the disc level. An L1β2 herniation (green) impinging upon the dural sac will tend to displace rather than compress the L2 root.
π Lower image: in the lower lumbar region the axilla is located at or sometimes above the level of the disc. An L4-5 herniation here (green) encounters a nerve root which is relatively immobile and this is more likely to cause root compression
