...and with Thanksgiving made - now, we can dive into deep winter vibes.
Annually, we recognise Thanksgiving as a holiday where people can connect with their local yoga community and know that there are others who crave connection, shared communal values, and collaborative meals that represent the TRUTH of how we need each other - to survive, and thrive!
As a native New Yorker, I keep this tradition alive - with all of its connotations.
With towns called 'New Hyde Park, Huntington, New York City...' but also 'Manhasset, Montauk, Patchogue, Merrick, and of course Manhattan.'
We were taught that the Pilgrims (English settlers that moved to Holland then Massachusetts seeking religious freedom) and Native American Indians 'broke bread' and lived in brotherhood.
Yes, Native tribes and Sachems (leaders) collaborated with settlers, taught them how to grow foods, how to survive on the land. But humans are not noted for being so accommodating to each other.
We know that Native people were willing (+ had) to work and trade with settlers, but ultimately, they were fighting for their rights, lives, dignity, sacred places and land to live on. They continue to fight for these basics today. With many agreed subsidies cancelled with the current admin. π§π©Έπ§π©Έπ§
The US gov't did not abide by its own treaties, and savagely claimed the land.
(That's not what we want to be celebrating)
πͺΆ When we gather on Thanksgiving here in Sheffield, we gather...πͺΆ
πΈ As a yoga community - aiming to recognise that yoga teaches compassion, equality, respect, and non-violence.
πΈ For a vegan potluck - so that we are not contributing to the massacre of turkeys and other animals for our enjoyment or sustenance.
πΈ To remember the value of connection for those who are 'part of the yoga tribe' and those who are part of the wider community seeking safe spaces to be with others.
πΈTo share food! No gifts, no payment, no religion - just to be nourished by food and company.
Recognising cultural exchanges throughout history that have brought us here.
π¦ We also do it to express gratitude... π¦
For the privilege of life in this beautiful, safe city
That we have something to be thankful for.
