Type 2 diabetes treatment typically involves medication that helps to maintain a normal blood sugar level. This medication is normally lifelong and will also help prevent any further long-term complications of diabetes, including high blood pressure and reduced blood circulation to the feet. The type of medication and dosage varies widely and is often dependent on individual needs; you will be recommended the most suitable medicines for you by your GP.

There are a number of risk factors that can lead to the development of the condition:
As we age, our risk increases, especially for over 40s. This can be attributed to the fact that, as we get older, the pancreas begins to produce insulin less effectively. Also, bodily resistance to insulin can increase.
Genetics is also big factor. For example, if you have a close relative with the condition, such as a parent or sibling, your risk increases.
Poor diet and lifestyle choices hugely impact health and increase the likelihood of having Type 2 diabetes, including lack of exercise and being overweight or obese. Browse healthy diet and lifestyle advice here.

With less obvious symptoms than type 1, people who have type 2 diabetes may be unaware. Type 2 diabetes symptoms in both women and men can develop relatively slowly and therefore can often go unnoticed for an extended period of time.

However, the most common symptoms in adults are:
Increased thirst
Passing water more often, especially at night
Extreme tiredness
Blurred vision
Slow healing wounds
Ge***al itching and regular instances of thrush
Recognising type 2 diabetes in the early stages of development can delay or prevent other more serious, long-term complications. If you are experiencing any of the signs and symptoms above, ease your mind with a simple blood test which can diagnose diabetes at your local pharmacy.

It is estimated that there are currently 3.5 million people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK, type 2 diabetes accounts for 90% of these cases. It is also predicted that 1.1 million people have diabetes and don’t even know it.

Type 2 diabetes is a condition that affects how the body uses glucose, a sugar we use as a source of energy. Once glucose is released from the food we eat and enters the bloodstream, your body releases a hormone called insulin. Type 2 diabetes is caused when the body responds abnormally to the insulin produced, creating a resistance. This means that unused glucose can build up in your bloodstream causing high blood sugar levels.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition; which means that the body attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. It has not yet been determined what triggers this autoimmunity; it is just known that, unlike type 2 diabetes, lifestyle factors do not contribute to its development. However, what is certain is that there are risk factors:

It can be hereditary. If one of your close relatives has type 1 diabetes, this includes a mother, father, sister or brother, then your chance of developing it increases by 6%
Damage to the pancreas, such as through injury, can inhibit its ability to produce insulin
Some researchers suggest that a viral infection or illness, affecting the pancreas, could also be one of the causes of type 1 diabetes

Type 1 diabetes treatment
It may take a little while for you to get your head around monitoring your blood glucose levels and managing your treatment, but be patient with yourself. Through the right support, which we can offer you, life with diabetes will not hold you back.

In order to maintain normal blood glucose levels, Type 1 diabetes treatment involves regular doses of insulin. This can come in the form of insulin injections – most people need 2-4 a day – or, alternatively, insulin pump therapy, which involves a small device that continuously pumps insulin into your bloodstream at a controllable rate.

Make sure you keep track of your glucose levels, this can be done quickly and simply with blood glucose tests that you can buy online.

Whilst in adults Type 1 diabetes symptoms can develop over a few months, for children it can be a matter of weeks or days. However, with the right treatment, they should disappear. If you have not been diagnosed with diabetes and frequently experience these symptoms, you should visit a health care professional as soon as possible.

Type 1 diabetes is affecting around 360,000 people in the UK today.* Diabetes is a lifelong, metabolic condition that affects an individual’s blood glucose (blood sugar) levels. Our body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose – small, sugar units that are used up in cells to provide the body with energy. Under normal circumstances, an organ called the pancreas produces insulin, which is a hormone designed to control the amount of glucose in the blood.

However, type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the pancreas no longer produces any insulin. As a result, unused glucose builds up in the blood, causing blood sugar levels to become too high. This can lead to the sudden development of potentially life-threatening symptoms.

The key benefit of a face shield is that it is fluid-resistant i.e. it prevents bodily fluids from making contact with the face. For healthcare workers treating patients who have COVID-19, a face shield is an important piece of personal protective equipment (PPE).

There is no need for members of the general public to use face shields when they are out of the house. It is only necessary for healthcare workers, or those working in certain industries who are coming into close contact with people who may have or there is a high possibility that they have COVID-19.

“Face mask” is a term used for healthcare workers and those who encounter work-related risk of COVID-19. Whereas “face coverings” is a more general term that can apply to lots of different kinds of disposable and reusable face coverings. You don’t need to wear a surgical-style mask when you leave the house to shop or travel on public transport; a simple face covering such as scarf, bandana or homemade covering will be sufficient.

“Face covering” is the term being used by the UK government to describe a piece of material that can be secured around the face to cover the nose and mouth. Face coverings can be worn by the general public, but healthcare or and other “at risk” workers must wear the medically graded face masks

A face covering is not the same as the surgical masks or respirators used by healthcare and other workers as part of personal protective equipment. These should continue to be reserved for those who need them to protect against risks in their workplace, such as health and care workers, and those in industrial settings, like those exposed to dust hazards.

In short, “face covering” is a general term that might apply to any of the following:

Scarf
Bandana
Homemade mask
Shop-bought disposable or reusable mask
A covering will be suitable if it can tie comfortably around your head, cover your nose and mouth, and allow you to breathe easily.

Do I need to clean a disposable mask?
If you’re using a disposal face mask, this can’t be cleaned and should be removed and disposed of carefully. Remember to wash your hands after removing the mask and before you apply a new one.

How long can you wear a disposable mask for?
A disposable mask or face covering is designed to be worn once. You can wear a face mask until they become wet or dirty this could be because of your breath or the weather. When they’re wet or dirty, face masks become less effective and harder to breathe through. So, you should dispose of your mask and wear a new one.

Can you clean a face mask filter?
If your reusable mask has a filter, remove the filter from the mask and dispose of it before washing the mask as you would in the steps above.

How long do reusable face coverings last until disposal?
You should follow the washing instructions of the fabric your reusable face mask is made from. This will help it to last longer, however you should throw away your reusable face mask if any holes appear.

How long do reusable face coverings last?
This will depend on the covering. Make sure to check the specifications for your coverings. For example, the Kisetsu water repellent reusable face coverings and reusable fabric face coverings are suitable to be washed up to 20 times.

How do I clean face masks and coverings at home?
If you have a reusable face mask or covering, then these should be cleaned between uses. Here’s some advice from Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on how to wash a reusable face mask.

Using a washing machine
You can include your face masks and coverings in with the rest of your washing, using regular laundry detergent and the warmest appropriate water setting for the cloth used to make the mask. If you purchased the covering, check for any instructions on the packaging. For example these adults single reusable face coverings can be washed at temperatures up to 60°C.

Hand washing
You can also wash your face covering by hand if you choose to.
To do so:
Check the label to see if your bleach is intended for disinfection, some products such as those for safe use on coloured clothing, may not be suitable. Make sure it’s not past its expiration date and never mix bleach with ammonia or any other cleanser.
Make up a solution of bleach by mixing 5 tablespoons of household bleach with a gallon (3.8 litres) of room temperature water.
Soak the mask in the bleach solution for 5 minutes.
Rinse thoroughly with cool or room temperature water.
Drying your mask
Using a tumble dryer
Use the highest heat setting and leave in your dryer until completely dry. Make sure you check the specification on your face coverings to ensure they can be tumble dried, these reusable fabric face coverings aren’t suitable to be tumble dried.

You should always wash your hands after:
Going to the toilet or helping someone else to
You have been sick
You have cared for some who is vomiting or has diarrhoea
Changing a nappy
Blowing your nose
You cough or sneeze
Touching rubbish or taking the bin out
Touching animals and pets
Touching animal food or treats, animal waste or cages/bedding

You should always wash your hands before and after:
Cooking with raw foods, including meat and vegetables
You eat or touch food
Treating a wound such as applying a plaster
Having s*x or s*xual activity
You should also wash your hands when you get into work and when you get home afterwards.

What else can I do?
Washing your hands with soap and water is the best way to keep them clean, but when you’re out and about, or at work, this may not always be possible.

There are things you can do to help keep your hands clean, such as using hand sanitiser gel when you can’t wash your hands with soap and water. Hand sanitisers can help to clean your hands; however, they are not as effective as soap, especially if your hands are visibility dirty.
