I’ve not posted for a long time as I’ve been unsure of the future of Bicycle Repair Man. It’s time to make some changes to the way I operate to make it less demanding on me.

I’m still available many hours a week for advice via Messenger or WhatsApp but will have less capacity available for repairs. Collection and drop off can be arranged up to 8pm most days and I’ll still try to turn simple jobs around quickly.

A basic service is still £40 but an intermediate has had to go up to £75 to cover the extra work being done on many bikes.

I’ll be closed for services from mid November until late February but will do unexpected repairs (derailleur hangers, brake pads, breakages for example). This is to decrease the time spent in a cold workshop during the winter months.

Hopefully this won’t stop you from contacting me because I’ll always fit it in or help if I can.

Happy riding!

I've kept my prices the same for the past year and have no intention of raising them in the near future.

A basic service is £40 and includes a full assessment, gear setup, brake set up, safety check and test ride. I also try and give you my best estimate of when parts will need replacing.

An intermediate service is £70 and includes all of the above plus a drivetrain clean. I'll fit up to 4 parts as whilst doing this service (brake pads, cassette and chain for example but the cost of these is extra) and check wheel tension. Most bikes don't need anymore than this so this is the most common service I do.

I'm happy to do a full service but think it's unnecessary much of the time.

I try to turn all jobs around in a week and if they don't need parts ordering it's often 48 hours or less. I can't offer a mobile service anymore so bikes need to come to me (S8 9EE). To help with this I can take them in before 9am or after 6pm if arranged in advance.

I've been doing this for nearly 30 years and my biggest fault is probably doing more than necessary to make sure each bike is as safe as I can make it.

Summer keeps threatening to arrive but we still seem to be getting more than our fair share of rain.

Over the last couple of months I've been noticing some components suffering more than usual from unusually high levels of wear and tear. Cables, chains, front derailleurs, brake pads and wheel hubs with ball bearings (such as Shimano) are all needing more work than usual and some of it is expensive (occasionally terminal amounts of wear). Do yourself a favour and treat the current season as a winter with regards to servicing as it'll pay dividends in the way your bike rides and eventually in your pocket.

Basic service is £40 and an intermediate £70, I'm away on holiday for half of August but still have some availability.

Hopefully Spring will arrive soon and we can all get out on our bikes a bit more often!

Remember though that even when they're not in use bikes can deteriorate and need checking every so often. Keep the tyres pumped to a reasonable pressure, check the chain isn't dry and starting to rust and that your seatpost has some grease or carbon compound on it (depending on what it's made of). These 5 minute checks can save you a fortune in spares replacement and means your bike will be ready when you are.

Most of the time a basic service will help alleviate many of these issues and doesn't cost a fortune, it's worth having one done before putting the bike away for a period of time (if you have summer and winter bikes or are like me and don't like riding in the cold or wet anymore 🥴).

Oh and if you fancy a new bike this Liv Avail SL (size small) is for sale, PM me for more details.

Winter is tough on bikes, a bit of tlc can go a long way in the wet, cold weather we'll be having the next few months.

A basic winter service starts at £40 and includes a full diagnosis of the current state of your bike, a tune up and l**e. An application of grease in the right spots can keep mechanical cables working better for much longer and improve their lifespan.

Contact me for more details. Anything from the smallest job to a full renovation done at reasonable prices.

Summer finally seems to be arriving and lots of people will be thinking about using their bike more. Problem is most bike workshops have long waiting lists so even small issues can mean long waits.

Why not get it serviced so you can spend the summer riding rather than waiting for a repair. It'll save you time, and money, in the long run and you'll have your bike when you want it.

I do free assessments and servicing starts from £40, I'll do anything from a quick gear tune to full renovation. Some old photos but the cat is still here and I work outside quite a lot in the summer.

Message me and I'll respond as quickly as I can.

Finally got around to making changes to my winter workshop. New bench, toolboard and a parts washer built and ready for use.

I've also decided to keep a few more parts in stock, these include the most common Shimano MTB and road disc brake pads.

After 2 years I've had to increase my labour charges slightly, each service now costs an extra £5 (basic is £40 and intermediate is £70) but I do more work than bike shops will do for the equivalent.

Assessment is still free and I'm happy to try and help and advise via DM. I'll do anything from a wheel true to full renovation and have examples of some of the larger jobs I've done. All of this is backed up by over 25 years of experience working in the industry.

Spring is nearly here so your bike's been through the worst of winter, why not treat it to some TLC and have it serviced.

A basic service is £35, this will check components for wear and tear, reset the gears and brakes and all the nuts and bolts will be torqued to the correct tightness. A drivetrain clean is £15 extra and will clean and rel**e the essential parts of the drivetrain.

If your bike needs more work then I also offer intermediate and full services, brake bleeds, wheel services and gear services.

DM me for availability and a free assessment.

I've not posted for quite a while and think now is a good time to say why.

In September I had emergency surgery on my upper spine to prevent certain lower body paralysis. This has left me struggling to balance and therefore walk easily. I am improving slowly and will be taking on bike repairs again in the near future.

I've decided that my prices will remain the same for the foreseeable future, some expenses have risen but due to the current cost of living crisis I'll absorb those myself.

This means, when I re--open mid January that a basic service will still only cost £35, an intermediate will still be £60 and a full service £100. Hopefully this will encourage people to have their bikes serviced and use them to save on commuting, shopping and leisure journeys in the city.

I'd like to thank all of my customers for their support this year and hope that 2023 is better for everyone.

I've taken the decision to make this my full time job so from the 1st of September I'll have more availability. There'll be a website with prices and a way of working out the cost of a mobile call out.

Services will start at £40 for a basic service, £70 for an intermediate and £110 for a full strip down and rebuild service. These are prices if a customer brings the bike to my workshop.

Other services include gear and brake services at £25, parts fitting costs from £10 and I will assess and price, as accurately as I can, for free. My minimum labour charge is £10 for small jobs.

I'm fully insured, very experienced and passionate about bikes, I won't return the bike to you until I'm totally happy it's safe and working as well as it can be (obviously this may depend on age of the bike and how much it's sensible to spend on it).

Turnaround time can be anything from 5 minutes to 3 days depending on the job, parts availability and workload (occasionally it can be much longer due to currents parts availability issues).

Give me a go, you won't be disappointed, or overcharged. I'm happy to supply parts or fit yours and no job is too small.
