SAMA Ayurvedic Therapies Cruelty free Ayurvedic Diet and lifestyle consultant and massage therapist working in Sheffield. Trained at the Institute of Ayurveda U.K.

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian medical system based on the 5 elements. This approach to health is extremely holistic seeing everyones constitution as a unique balance of the elements which are categorised in to 3 'doshas'. Things in our lives including diet, exercise and seasonal changes can easily cause an imbalance and this is when disease occurs. There are many Ayurvedic therapies which address these imbalances and a diet and lifestyle consultation helps us understand whats going on on a deep level. Rheanna trained at the Institute of Ayurveda and offers these consultations as well as Ayurvedic massage. Message the page for further information.

I teach on Mondays at the kettle club, my lovely friends Kerry and Anna will be teaching Thursdays.

Through the Monday sessions we will work with the winter season, where kapha is dominant in the environment. Through movement, breath work and long holds we will embrace kaphas beneficial qualities such as gentleness, commitment, self reflection and kindness while helping to avoid kapha accumulation, which can lead to lethargy, tiredness, lack of motivation, clogged sinuses, tightness in the chest, a sluggish digestion, poor circulation and a feeling of numbness or sadness often known as SAD (seasonal affective disorder).

A great alternative to tomato sauce...

Here is a lovely sauce recipe you can use on pasta, gnocchi, or as a dip or side. Peppers are a great alternative to tomatoes as although they are slightly heating they are much less aggravating to the pitta dosha than tomatoes or chilli. Go for yellow or orange peppers for a sweeter taste and even....

Happy new year 🥳 hope it’s a bit of an easier one for everyone. You can book January in person and zoom Ayurvedic yoga sessions via the link in bio. Mondays and Wednesdays from the 5th Jan….
These sessions will be Ayurveda inspired hatha/vinyasa flow, suitable for all levels and pregnancy. In Ayurveda we look at the dominating elements in each season and use yoga among other things to help release any excess accumulation.

During winter time we use the elements of water and earth to settle, ground, build, repair and relax. When we have excess of these elements it can accumulate in the chest area, the fat tissue and the muscle tissue causing blockage, poor circulation and water retention.

The Kapha dosha has the qualities of cold, wet, slow, sticky and soft. Excess can lead to stagnation of the digestive system, blocked sinuses, low mood and lethargy so the yoga sessions in January will focus on opening and releasing in these areas and bringing some gentle warmth and energy to the body.

- Mondays 6-7pm kettle Club near Bramell Lane (there will also be yoga sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the same venue run by the lovely .yoga and )
- Wednesdays 6:30-7:30pm Zoom
The Wednesday sessions will be a repeat of the Monday session and will be pay as you feel.

Pinda sweda is a heat treatment where balls of medicated rice wrapped in material are rubbed across the body. In addition to all the benefits of Ayurvedic massage, Pinda sweda helps relieve pain and stiffness across muscle, bone and nerve tissue, helps remove toxins by opening up the pores, improves movement of joints and removes water retention. You can make your own at home and use it on particularly tense areas of the body or on the chest to relieve mucus and phlegm.

NEW BLOG POST : Transitions and cycles through the lense of Ayurveda

https://www.samatherapies.com/single-post/transitions-and-cycles-according-to-ayurveda

Ever found that you feel much more tired after sleeping in, or you feel restless and unfocussed late afternoon? Perhaps at certain times of your period you feel more alive and compassionate compared to others when everyone feels incredibly irritating? Do you feel more motivated at work and social life during the summer or feel very down in the winter months? Perhaps you suffer from hayfever in the spring or become more anxious in the autumn? Have you recently experienced a shift in your mind or body as you have reached a new age in your life?

Ayurveda is a truly holistic science in the way that it sees everything in cycles and relationships with one another. In this blog piece I wish to explore these cycles and how they can help us relate and connect to the world around us, how they can deepen our intuition and nourish our bodies and minds. We owe our whole existence to these cycles, however because of our 9-5 lifestyles and cultural disconnect with nature, these natural shifts can feel more problematic and unexpected than nourishing, often leading to transitional health issues. If we can find ways to acknowledge and flow with these cycles then our body and mind has an easier time and it may result in a deeper understanding of ourselves and our place in the world.

I will discuss the Ayurvedic 12 hour clock, doshic seasons, stages of life and the lunar cycle. 🌝🌝🌝🌝🌝

✨What is Healthism? ✨

Healthism is a system that sees health as a moral imperative and that defines health as looking and being a certain way. It separates behaviours into categories (eg. good or bad) and gives full responsibility to the individual. Robert Crawford first described it in 1980 as being ‘ a preoccupation with personal health as a primary focus for the definition and achievement of wellbeing'. By elevating health to the highest value (everything good in life is down to a particular type of perceived health) we re-inforce privatisation of the struggle for general wellbeing, while at the same time denigrating anything/anyone that appears outside of the perfect health bubble. This makes way for accepted and internalised prejudice, marginalisation and abusive behaviours at a systemic and ideological level.

Ayurvedic medicine naturally debunks the myths surrounding healthism by first rejecting the idea that one size/way of existing fits all and secondly seeing health in a much broader sense which places great value on mental and emotional health as well as our connection with the environment around us and it’s health.

However, we still see Healthism crop up in this field due to our internalised bias’ as well as the capitalist structures we live within. For example we see it in the obsession with weight reduction and associated detox programmes that have misconstrued Ayurvedic principles, using them to prop up a fatphobic message. Health takes multiple forms and is not linked to our intrinsic value. Wellness culture must re-focus it’s message, dismantling anything within its structure that supports marginalisation and oppression of certain groups or behaviours.

It’s our job working in this field to ask questions constantly and be sure we are only using Ayurvedic principles in order to genuinely support someone who is asking for support, meeting them where they are, holding a safe and non-judgmental space for them, valuing the experiences they bring and constantly challenging our own subconscious ideals and perceptions.

✨Full moon gathering✨

SUNDAY 4:30-6:30pm DM TO BOOK

For this full moon we will be exploring communication and conflict from an Ayurvedic perspective. We will look into how the Doshas (bodily humours) and Gunas (qualities of the mind) interact with each other and when and why that can cause dispute. We will explore how each Dosha/constitution prefers to communicate and how imbalances can interfere with these channels.

We will have space for reflection and discussion and a concluding meditation. Through exploring the appropriate Pranayama (breathwork) for each example of doshic conflict and practicing Asanas (yoga postures) that nourish and create a safe space for the throat chakra to thrive and the heart chakra to feel understood - we aim to leave you feeling empowered and confident to share you ideas and navigate both internal and external relationships!

This workshop is completely suitable for beginners through to advanced knowledge of Ayurveda and will include an intro to the doshas for new participants.
