As a diabetic I’m sometimes told - you can’t have cake you have diabetes. I got this card for a birthday a few years back by Minfulmess Ian Blake. It’s a fun way of considering whether to eat cake or not.
Here’s the thing about that question and me with diabetes and coeliac disease.
There are several different sorts of diabetes - pregnancy/gestational, injury or surgical removal of the pancreas, cystic fibrosis, type 2 when the pancreas is overwhelmed with work from diet and lack of exercise and mine - Type 1 Diabetes. There is a hereditary element, and sometimes after a virus the body starts on itself - an autoimmune disease.
So my pancreas is now damaged beyond repair and no longer produces insulin.
Back to the cake question… my flow chart would be…
what is my blood glucose level now?
Have I injected insulin within the last 4 hours?
Am I able to go for a walk or jog after eating?
Have I just been for a walk or jog?
Am I generally feeling well or do I have a virus?
Have I recently eaten anything or due to have a meal?
How many carbs are there in this cake portion I’m thinking of eating?
If I do have a slice, how much insulin will I need to inject?
What is my ratio of carbs:insulin for me at this time of day?
Did I exercise yesterday?
Seriously yes… all of these!
These are just some of the daily internal calculations your healthy pancreas balances hormones and I have to make these consciously - when considering the question of ‘Can I eat cake’.
Then I need to know if it’s 100% gluten free cake and likely to be without contamination from other crumbs of gluten or else I’ll be sick and my guts will be damaged.
Can I eat cake… erm yea sometimes if I fancy it and do the mental gymnastics.
