Earlier this year, I had this team from the British Army approach me for a 2 day Outdoor First Aid course at their barracks. They're off to Peru to do the (high altitude) Ausangate Trek and wanted a course to prepare them specifically for this.

It so happens that I have led that trek, and with 12 years (of a previous life) serving in the Army Reserve, I was well-placed to take this booking.

I annotated our usual course to cater to their specific needs, including lessons on altitude, GI issues, and the principles of the Ten Second Triage.

For me, it was super lovely too, to be working with a number of Nepali Ghurkas since their home is a fond destination close to my heart.

I love these podcasts. Even a humble first aider can learn loads from these. This is next on my playlist!

Ha, love this. When I asked these teachers if they'd ever practised their first aid training outside before, the response was a resounding no!

It's really important to practise what you're taught or it just becomes sterile, theoretical and easily forgotten. Going outside for hands-on experience is a huge learning opportunity prompting lots of discussion and thought. And it's fun!

Outdoor First Aid is our bread and butter, but we're also pretty damn good at delivering great training wherever and whoever you might be!

I was recently working with a client who does a lot of work for the Girl Guides Association. She told me that everyone in Guiding has to have a completed set of medical and next of kin details, on them, easily found in a top pocket or pouch ...

For a long time now I have thought about how my clients can best help me should I be the one to have an accident? In turn I have now updated the casualty monitoring card we use on our outdoor first aid courses to include a first aid aide memoir to help novices do some first aid (should I be the casualty).

And then I thought, actually, if I print these out every time I meet a client team, I could ask everyone to complete this form. They can keep it in a top pocket etc, and that way I know that in the event of an accident their medical details will be available right there in the location where they're needed. It also means that I don't need to carry sheafs of paperwork, nor refer back to emails should I need this information!

Make sense? What do you think?

Really interesting... People being influenced by social media, and using apps to navigate with, leading to a massive (and unsustainable) increase in mountain rescue call outs.

I wonder if this is also because people are less prepared to self-rescue? Do we live in a society that no longer is able to take responsibilty for its own actions?
