You may have seen the news about a meningitis outbreak in Kent. So far two students have died. Often we may think of meningitis as that thing with "the rash" that doesn't fade under a rolled glass.

The signs and symptoms of meningitis are varied, and it may be that the rash doesn't even present itself, (or for non-Caucasian people, not easily seen).

If someone is looking ill, keep an eye on them. Check their temperature, look for a rash. If anything just feels wrong, or if things get worse, follow your gut instinct and just call 111.

Meningitis is very contagious, so keep other family members away/safe and confined to the same house.

(People born from 2015 will likely have been vaccinated for this particular strain).

Twice this year I have had to manage a casualty with a suspected spinal injury, and the second time the casualty in question was me. It has got me thinking about the reality of managing a casualty who has a suspected spinal injury: rarely are they lying flat in a warm space with help just minutes away …

Traditionally guidelines typically say “For a suspected spinal injury, do not move the person unless they are in immediate danger”. But reality and the latest research suggests that this is not necessarily the best approach.

Simply known as the casualty card. Free to print off, weighs nothing, yet so few people understand how important they are.

When I take a group climbing, or scrambling or mountain biking, the first thing I do is show them this and where it is. If I'm the casualty, it might be just enough to help guide them through what to do.

For me as a first aider, it keeps me grounded, asking my casualty questions that the medics might need the answers to later on. It ensures I'm focused on monitoring my casualty, regularly checking their vital signs, which in turn help keep me up to date on how the casualty is doing.

Just do a search for Will4Adventure Casualty Card and you'll find this free to print off. (Mine is on waterproof paper).

Earlier this year, I had this team from the British Army approach me for a 2 day Outdoor First Aid course at their barracks. They're off to Peru to do the (high altitude) Ausangate Trek and wanted a course to prepare them specifically for this.

It so happens that I have led that trek, and with 12 years (of a previous life) serving in the Army Reserve, I was well-placed to take this booking.

I annotated our usual course to cater to their specific needs, including lessons on altitude, GI issues, and the principles of the Ten Second Triage.

For me, it was super lovely too, to be working with a number of Nepali Ghurkas since their home is a fond destination close to my heart.
