So, whilst I’m off I’ll make a start on how I got to where I am today in view of the page changing and my recent diagnosis.
Almost a year ago, I had a lump I noticed on my neck when I swallowed it moved up and down. It crossed my mind…..is it my normal anatomy that I’d just not noticed because when do we ever drink in a mirror to see stuff like that?! It was soft and moved so sounded like good signs.
Scan = suspicious
FNA (fine needle biopsy) = indeterminate cells looked suspicious again.
So recommended I have the left side of my thyroid removed to have it sent for histology.
Results= follicular variant papillary carcinoma, to come back in a week after the MDT.
Returned= MDT decided was cancer and all removed, no further treatment.
‼️A WEEK LATER = letter from the hospital with my diagnosis “ ? Follicular variant? Papillary variant ?cancerous/ ? non cancerous”
I returned to speak to the consultant about the overall diagnosis after being told different by himself previously, he said he’s just the surgeon not the pathologist, he’s not sure but that was the overall outcome. I said I could attend a different hospital for a second opinion which he actually advised I do.
⏭️ Fastforward, new hospital gets all my slides, a top pathologist and endocrine consultant look at all the info and slides and I get called in to be seen face to face.
‼️ Diagnosis follicular variant papillary thyroid carcinoma, which was removed from the left side, HOWEVER (the important bit)- the cells were splitting fast which makes it an aggressive form and risk of spread. This is 6 months after the original surgery. Their advice is remove all the thyroid and radio ion therapy.
I couldn’t get my head round this and was adamant I wasn’t having any more treatment, but after lots of questions, tears and advice on the 25/2/25 my full thyroid was removed and I will now remain on thyroxine for life at a high dose.
The next step is Radio Ion Therapy in 8-10 weeks time.
So that’s the story in a nutshell, and here I am in bed recovering ready for the next step.
